Ok, well, maybe not. I'm not sure. Out of all the ridonkulous ideas in "Natural Cures," his claim that sunscreen causes cancer seemed to be one of the most absurd. But I was reading an article on cnn.com today that got me clicking around and there are lots of folks out there claiming that oxybenzone and other common sunscreen ingredients are potentially harmful. For example, from Wikipedia's oxybenzone entry:

This organic compound has been shown to penetrate into the skin where it acts as a photosensitizer. This results in an increased production of free radicals under illumination, which makes this substance a photocarcinogen.

I don't know enough to determine whether or not this is woo or a legit problem. I sunburn easily so for lots of years now I've been in the habit of wearing sunscreen whenever I'm outside.

Any of you have any insight on this?

Ummm, I don't know about the ingredients causing cancer, but there was a piece on The One Show a little while ago stating that skin cancer was increasing in those who wore sunscream as opposed to those who didn't. They concluded that this was because people don't put enough sunscreen on and think they are protected when they are not, whereas if you're not wearing any sunscream, you try to minimise exposure. They showed how much was meant to be put on, and basically, you'd end up going through about 3 bottles for an afternoon on the beach.

Isn't there also the thought that many people who use sunscreen stay out longer than they would without it thereby having an overall greater negative effect?

OT, but is it just me, or does Trudeau now have a book on economics?

I would how much of that one is secondhand woo.

I was reading a New York Times article called "10 Things to Scratch From Your Worry List" - about getting cancer from cell phones, things like that. In the article, the author mentions his colleage, "Tara Parker-Pope." It was an interesting name and kind of a tongue-twister so I couldn't help but notice it. That story reminded me of my recent concerns about sun screen so I Googled to find more info on that subject. The very first article I clicked on was written a week and a half ago by Tara Parker-Pope. How should I go about collecting my million dollars from Mr. Randi?

For those who are interested, Parker-Pope's article suggests that there's no evidence that oxybenzone is harmful.

By the way, TheDaver, I did see that book in Barnes & Noble yesterday. Sheesh.

Trudeau is right if by right you mean offering yet more proof that PT Barnum's statement on the birthrate of the extremly credulous is as true now as it was in the 1800's.

And what makes even more bizarre is that Trudeau has been convicted of felony charges of fraud on several occasions.

I don´t have any personal insight, but a dermatologist named Matin Weinstock has looked into studies performed on the subject. His conclusion is that the balance of evidence tips towards continued use of sunscreen. You can read the abstract of a review here -> http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10750728?ordinalpos=19&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum

That's just Them trying to stop the Truth being revealed.:jaw-dropp:boggled::confused::p:covereyes

You already know this, but for other people that is exactly the line that Trudeau uses: His convictions on credit card fraud were part of a plot by "They" to silence him.
I admit, Trudeau is slick. He realised that copping an anti Establishment attitude is good sucker bait.

Wow, just googling "oxybenzone" turns up scads of sites chiming in on whether it may or may not be carcinogenic.

Seems a little light on, you know, actual evidence, but whatever.

Can anyone find the elusive British Medical Journal study frequently alluded to, but not actually linked to?

People who wear sunscreen won't be spending even more time in the sun than they normally would, they are just not getting as sunburnt. Most people I know still don't bother, and walk around all peeling and blistered. Then people ask me why I look so young for my age when someone else my age is all brown and leathery looking with huge age spots

It is most important to make sure kids wear it, when they are growing and have their cells replicating at the fastest rate in their lives.

I haven't seen one single reliable source saying that people who use it get more skin cancer than people who don't. You would have to compare rates of people who spend the same amount of time in the sun, and have the same amount of pigment to begin with, no matter if they are wearing it or not, and there are plenty of people who are spending all day long in the sun without it. Whities like me start out with higher rates of skin cancer to begin with, having no natural pigment for protection.

Beware of altie/health sites that don't do proper comparisons. They just want you to hate anything "modern", "mainstream", and "unnatural" in favor of their products that supposedly aren't modern and unnatural.
