Keith Allen vs Louis Theroux

Just watched the Channel 4 program Keith Allen Will Burn in Hell, about his encounter with the members of the Westboro Baptist Church. I'd be interested in the opinion of those Brit viewers who caught the program about his program compared to Louis Theroux's recent documentary The Most Hated Family in America. Louis aproached his encounters with an air of innocence, and put his questions to the members of the church in a similar fashion (in particular spending time with the younger members of the church, who seemed less brain-washed than their seniors). Keith was a lot more confrontational and, as he put it, 'secularly evangelical'. I applaud both of them for attempting to get the members to question their beliefs (and for lasting more than 10 minutes in their presence without their brains imploding), but is there any point trying to 'de-convert' these people? And if so, which approach is more effective?

Has anyone tried praying for them?

Has anyone tried praying for them?

Probably. But if they didn't explicitly state in their prayer that they hated homosexuals (and homosexual-enablers of course), they weren't doing it right, and are going straight to hell, do not collect £200, as a result.

i didn't really like the Keith Allen doc...it was nowhere near as good as Loius Theroux's in any case - I turned over during his interminable shouting match with the family spanning parts 3 and 4....

It was very interesting when he revealed the illegitimacy of that evil cow's first child. Very interesting indeed.

It was all put into perspective right at the beginning though, when he quoted a friend who advised him "you'll never win an argument with them: they're blind to facts".

I preferred Louis, although I only caught the second half of the programme last night.

I wouldn't start an argument with these people, it's just pointless. Like last night when he was arguing with the younger girl and he told her to try to argue without quoting passages from the bible. Her retort? To quote a passage from the bible.

I'm trying to 'de-doctrinate' a guy in my work team gradually - and we discussed the programme a bit this morning. Even though he thinks the Phelps are complete nutters, he still doesn't see how his somewhat milder beliefs are just as irrational - e.g. thinking that most of the New Testament is historical fact, thinking the book of Revelation is close to the mark etc. My point being, that if you can't persuade people with less hardcore beliefs to listen to your arguments, you are never going to succeed with such raving loonies as the Phelps.

What's scary is that apart from grandpappy Phelps, they don't seem to be hate-filled - just completely lacking in critical thinking and utterly sure of their beliefs. They don't seem to feel any violent hatred towards homosexuals, they're just utterly convinced they (and everyone else for that matter) are going to hell. I think Louis Theroux said in an interview about the program that if a member of the church met a homosexual, they wouldn't humiliate them or be rude, they'd shake their hand. The younger girls in Louis' program came across as very pleasant intelligent young women, which made it all the more shocking when they that all 'fags' were going to hell.

It's the bred-in (brainwashed?) absolute arrogance that constantly astounds me.

They all, absolutely seriously and 100% BELIEVE that they, and only they, only the 75 of them in that so-called church are going to heaven and that the entire 6 billion+ population of the rest of the world will be damned to HELL for all eternity.

What's more, they're incredibly happy about it.

Heaven's going to be a very lonely place.

Astonishing, mind-blowing arrogance.

Well, 74 of them. The illigitimate one probably isn't going to get in.
