Kansas Prof Beat-up for Wanting to Expose ID?

Doesn't surprise me a bit. To most fundamentalists, "tolerance" is a bad word.

He was probably ill advised to make these kind of comments, considering he's teaching in Kansas, like..

"Mirecki had referred to religious conservatives as "fundies," and said a course describing intelligent design as mythology would be a "nice slap in their big fat face."

Attention: All intelligent people! Leave Kansas at once! Everyone to get from street! It's flat. Leave it that way.

All the way down.

This is what makes Europeans laugh at America. Not with you, but at you.

No offense, mates, but it does.

However, Europeans who characterize all Americans as being like that are really no better.

Oh this is rich.

Check out the headline on this article:

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,177793,00.html

"Kansas Creationism Professor Attacked". The link from the main Fox News page is "Creationism Professor Attacked". Makes it sound like a guy was attacked for his religious views. Probably by evil secularists or atheists.

There's a link to the right in the article which says correctly, "Anti-creationism professor attacked".

He's lucky he only got beaten. Back in the good old days they used to do far worse.

"I made a mistake in not leading by example, in this student organization e-mail forum, the importance of discussing differing viewpoints in a civil and respectful manner," he said.

It's true. He shouldn't have called them "fundies," he shouldn't have said he was going to slap them in the face. Still, that's not an excuse to beat him up. Why do these people make deliberate ignorance a part of their social contract anyway? They're only hurting themselves in the long run.

Nothing convinces me of the legitimacy and truth, sorry, Truth, of a religion about love and peace and turning the other cheek like tales of violence perpetrated by its followers.

These people are scoring goals for atheism. Why don't they try sitting quietly at home, or doing good deeds and junk?

Like a couple of stupid kids represent fundamentalism as a whole. I bet their parents are beating them right now.

1. They are fundies.
2. The "slap in the face" is figurative, but fundies probably don't understand what that means.
3. Getting beat up for speaking out against injustice is not cool.
4. Creationists are unjust.

As a European living in the US, I'm inclined to say it puts the state of Kansas in a bad light. It's a big country, and differences between regions within should not be underestimated.

Note that I said "America".

Do you agree that this puts your country in a very bad light?

As a European living in Europe, I say it puts religious fundamentalists in a very bad light, as does your posts on the subject for you

Of course. And, in France the children of immigrents are rioting because of discrimination and lack of jobs. In the UK, dis-affected youth use football matches as excuses for binge drinking and riots (that are sometimes full of racist content), in Holland, Muslim fundumentalists feel emboldened to stab film-makers on the street...no connection here, it is a big world filled with losts of stupid people. I am not defending Kansas, it is a sad situation there and the State Board of Education is an embarassment. But, is it any worse in Kansas than most places in the world? Probably not. Should we continue to aspire to be better? Certainly.

Pre-emptive self defence. It's the American Way. :)
