Just had to reset my ASUS router admin/password setting again

I've just had to reset my configuration on my ASUS router AGAIN. I keep forgetting about it for months (a year) at a time because everything just works, but then, when I want to log in, I can't log in with my admin username and password.

This worries me, because it seems like nefarious third parties (comcast? asus? russians?) are hacking my router. For various reasons, I don't think that's what's going on.

A year ago I saved my configuration settings, and after resetting my router and loading these config settings, it seems to work again perfectly.

It's mildly annoying but I don't know why this keeps happening. I noticed that by default my connections keep going to asus when I try to log in to 192.168.0.1, and I think they strongly want me to use that, but I managed to override that.

It's an ASUS RT_AC66U. Yes, it's old but so am I and I don't want to keep changing everything all the time, so I'd like to keep using it.

I can't find anything out about what might be causing it. Any suggestions? Is it just hopelessly out of date?

ETA: when I try to go to 192.168.0.1 on my default browser, it redirects to http://www.asusrouter.com/Main_Login.asp. Patronising bastards!

As to my last point, I noticed I had to use Edge to go actually go to 192.168.0.1 instead of being redirected to asusrouter.com. Maybe I keep forgetting that, and the admin/password I use on 192.168.0.1 is not correct there. The login screen is exactly the same, so maybe that's been the problem all along and I just keep forgetting this happens....

My default browser is Opera if that helps...
