First time I've heard of this one, but it's perhaps a natural. John Judge, an influential early 9-11 "Truther", wrote an angry letter to Arianna Huffington after he had been dissed by Gerald Posner as believer in the "Kool-Aid hit squad", presents his evidence:

Mootoo found no evidence of cyanide pathology in the corpses, which is quite visible in the form of splayed limbs, arched backs, and a certain death grin known as rictus. These bodies were in calm repose, many lying limp where they fell. Mootoo, upon close examination, found fresh needle marks in the backs of almost all of them (85-90%), bent and broken needles (indicating forced injections). The remaining dead were either "shot or strangled" according to Mootoo. The Guyanese grand jury, hearing the real medical evidence, ruled not a single suicide happened at the Jonestown camp.

Who was behind this murder?

The original NYT headline (Nov. 18, 1978) correctly read "400 dead, 700 flee into jungle". Unfortunately, they were already surrounded by GDF, British Black Watch and eventually Green Beret troops. I and other researchers/journalists have spoken to some of these killers.

Permit me to quote from the autopsy report for Richard Castillo, one of the victims, available here:

At the scene, Dr. Mootoo, consulting forensic pathologist to the government of guyana, demonstrated cyanide in the gastric contents of sixty-five bodies both by field test and later in the laboratory and in the contents of syringes. Tests performed in the Division of toxicology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology revealed cyanide in probably fatal levels in two of the bodies autopsied as well as in the contents of a syringe received from the scene

This directly contradicts Judge's claims about Dr. Mootoo's findings as well as his claims about the absence of evidence of cyanide poisoning.

Just a few months after Jamestown, Mark Lane, who was one of founding fathers of JFK conspiracy theories(many people say his book "Rush to Judgement" was what started the JFK movement bigtime), and who by 1979 was a first class nutjob, was publishing articles proving the CIA was behind to discredit all the great work Jim Jones was doing.So this has been around for a while.
Huffpo, sadly, is becoming a major source of woo. They are really bad in the psuedo science department. The Skeptics Guide to the Universe Gang have been all over them for a number of months over the site's promotion of psuedo science, quack medicine in particular.

I remember reading a State Dept report in the late 1980s that noted how the Soviets loved using this kind of CT as part of their disinfo campaigns. Jonestown as a CIA operation, selling baby parts, etc. They had several third world papers (esp the "Patriot" in India) that they used to put these stories out to be picked up by other papers around the world.

Please excuse this as a Recovered Memory, not because it was traumatic, but because it was too boring to waste brain cells on.

My folks subscribed to Soviet Life. You guys have heard about the propaganda regarding crop yields in the communes? I lived with them second-hand, grabbing at a magazine with pictures. Though they were not in color, I grew up reading and (though I hadn't other sources, just a logical mind) mentally dismissing bull****.

It's been years since I remembered that time, and feel free to remind me when I forget it again .

I recently read the following, suggesting that the CIA is the most logical suspect for killing Congressman Ryan.

AN UNSOLVED ASSASSINATION

The killing of the Congressman at the airstrip had all the earmarks of a professional military hit. How do we know? The eyewitness journalists who wrote of the assassination described it as "silent, calm, brutal, carefully planned and mercilessly executed’" by well-trained killers.

There were never any reliable eyewitness identifications of the assassins. The official government eyewitness, Jim Cobb, admitted to the press that he never even had the shooters in his line of vision! The final tape at Jonestown repeatedly denied any knowledge of the identity of the Congressman’s assassins, and probing further, it said of the people who brought the report from the airstrip, "They saw it happen, and ran into the bush…" In other words, the people from Jonestown were not the shooters, but witnesses. And given the layout of the airstrip, they would have been looking at the shooters’ backs, not their faces. To this day, the assassins have not been identified.

Other complicating, unexplained factors involve that the shooters came from a second vehicle that had suddenly barrelled on in, and that dum-dum bullets were used in the assassination. The killers were so expert, that they easily disarmed Guyanese police on site, shot out the tires of the plane, and calmly walked through the wounded killing them.

The film taken by an NBC newsman on site also survived. It shows a sophisticated military formation called a "diamond" perfectly and professionally executed. Jonestown was not a paramilitary camp in any way, shape or form. Contrary to the lies about "hundreds of guns," the authorities discovered only the thirty-nine small weapons in tragedy’s wake. There was no military training whatsoever in Jonestown. There was no capability to pull off this professional "hit." So we must consider the most logical suspect for the killing of the Congressman: the C.I.A.
