Good thing he didn't win the nomination. What a jerk. He had no business running for president when this potential "October Surprise" was in his closet.

Yeah. The use of passive verbs like "happen."

But my biggest beef is that he ran hard for the nomination and continued even after he knew the tabloids had caught wind of this. Suppose he won the nomination and then this came out?
 
Now now, just because he was using his wife's cancer to play the sympathy card as he was running for office while at the same time cheating on her should be no reason to think he's just another morally deficient bottom-feeding scum of a trial lawyer.

Oh, wait...

I don't think he'd have been a good VP choice for Obama anyway.

The affair happened when Elizabeth was in remission. I'm not excusing him at all, but there's no need to make up stuff about something bad enough on its own.

I continue to be mad that John didn't get a paternity test done to issue when he did all of this. Now the tabloids will drag this out until he does, guaranteeing him minutes in the news coverage off and on during an election year. Another example of the ego at the core of all of this. Much disappointment, and my heart goes out to Elizabeth and the family.
 
He had an affair and lied about it. He is fully qualified (D) to be master of the White House. On second thought, he didn't lie under oath about it, so he has more work to do.
 
What exactly was he thinking? That this would not hand the election over to the Republicans if he had won the nomination? I'm honestly asking. What was he thinking?

Is this an example of somebody blinded by power?

It wasn't his wife's fault that he had an affair, but she became an accomplice after the fact in covering it up and supporting his run for president.

Just taking the Edwards current statements at their words, I am left with a very uncomfortable truth -- both John and Elizabeth Edwards cynically used their marriage as a means to help John Edwards win an election. Right now, they are hoping that the emotional goodwill that they built up from their supporters will carry them through.

I'm sure I'll get some angry comments here but if you're an Edwards supporter, let me put this bluntly; if you gave John and Elizabeth Edwards time, money, support, or goodwill, they played you.

They made a conscious decision to make their relationship a focus throughout the campaign. That emotional goodwill you feel for them? They not only let you feel, they took actions and made statements specifically so you would feel it.

Then when the rumors first surfaced, they made the worst decision of all; they decided to lie about it and to keep lying about it for months. They lied in a way that made the people who were telling the truth look like the real liars. They lied in a way that turned their supporters into attack dogs. They only started to tell the truth when John Edwards was caught at the Beverly Hills Hilton and even now both John and Elizabeth Edward are calling the people who caught him the liars. That's the definition of shameless.

Oh come on. You don't really believe that, do you? There's no reason to accept Edwards' timeline on its face, a timeline that just happens to put him in the best possible light.

Maybe he refuses a paternity test because it's his kid. :con2:

I think the answer is simply yes. He put his personal ambition above his party's interests. McCain and Giuliani also had affairs, but further in the past and they were already known and not covered up (any more). So having had an affair in the past is not a disqualification. The cover-up is worse than the affair.
 
As a reminder, Edwards actually finished second in the Iowa Caucuses, barely ahead of Hillary. Had he won there, or if the order had been Hillary, Edwards, Obama, it is quite possible he could have been the nominee.

And although Edwards claims the affair ended well before she became pregnant, that just doesn't make sense with other things he's admitted. Why did he meet her at the Beverly Hills Hilton last month? Either for some more hanky-panky, or to see his baby, right? About the best spin you can put on it is that he was dropping off some hush money.

And if it's his baby, guess what? The excuse that "my wife was in remission" goes out the window. The baby was born in February of this year; that means Hunter got pregnant in May of 2007. The announcement that Elizabeth Edwards had inoperable cancer came in March of 2007.

Not that I think cheating on your wife when she's in remission is a whole lot better.

With the lack of actual evidence to the contrary, yes, I will accept Edwards' timeline. You don't have any actual evidence to dispute it.

The news of his "willingness" to take a paternity test aggravates me still. Why didn't you already do it, Senator? You could have copped to this, released the paternity test at the same time, and made your part of this story done and over with. Now every media outlet will be ready to pounce and run this sordid affair through the front pages and evening news one more time.
 
Have to say that Edwards picked the best timing for the announcement: On a Friday, but also the Olympics is starting and a war is breaking out (Russia vs. Georgia).
 
I guess political leaders are human. Who woulda thunk it?

While I question the prudence of someone like Edwards to make such a dumb mistake given the American opinion (the French don't give a Damn) I don't see it really having any bearing on anything else.
