Interesting case of pareidolia occurring locally. A granite countertop company has a large slab of granite with a discoloration that has a striking resemblence to Jesus in Da Vinci's Last Supper. The funny thing is, no one at the company noticed it. It took somebody on the internet who was looking at images of materials on their web site to spot it, and call up to buy "the Jesus Slab."
It's on all the local news here. Some member of the faithful was spouting some nonsense about how wonderful it was that the image of Christ was locked in stone millions of years before he actually walked the earth.
The linked article mentions something about how odd it is that no other slabs from the Brazilian quarry had an image of Jesus. Actually, there would be a second one, the slab containing the opposite face where the first was sliced off. In veneer work, that would be called book slicing. How closely it matched would depend on how thick the blade was that cut the slabs apart and how much material was removed during the polishing process. Of course, the second image would be a mirror of the first. Does that mean the second slab shows the AntiChrist?
Just goes to show what passes as newsworthy on a slow news day. Somehow, it rated right up there with a family of five killed by a drunk driver as they were driving home from church.
