SALT LAKE CITY —- The day after making a jaw-dropping announcement that he won’t seek re-election, Congressman Jason Chaffetz told FOX 13 he may not even finish his term in office.

“When I contemplate another 200 nights away from home, it is just too much,” Chaffetz told FOX 13 news anchor Bob Evans.

Hours later, en route to Washington, D.C., Chaffetz released a statement, adding: “My future plans are not yet finalized but I haven’t ruled out the possibility of leaving early. In the meantime, I still have a job to do and have no plans to take my foot off the gas.”

The twitter/blog-sphere is rife with speculation. Long term affair about to uncovered is a popular one.

That's certainly plausible with Chaffetz "growing weary of sleeping on his office cot". Since he's a republican , maybe throw in the possibility that it was an affair with a man.

Whatever it is, he certainly gives appearance of trying to get way out ahead of something.

Well Hillary Clinton isn't president so he probably believes that his job is complete.

He would appear to be too much of a hypocrite if he didn't pursue Trump with the same zeal with which he pursued Clinton.

I've seen some speculation suggesting that is indeed the reason.

His party will not tolerate an investigation of a president of its own party, no matter how blatant the need. Of course, there are vast and multiple grounds for investigation, especially after the precedent he set with Benghazi. There is enormous popular and public pressure to investigate, which he cannot avoid, short of not having any public events at all, which makes re-election campaigning difficult, to say the least.

He won't go against his own party, he can't go against the popular will.

So he quits, and hopes to avoid blame that way.

Rats and ships, and all that. Somebody had to be the first to go.

Are Republican politicians capable of caring about how hypocritical they appear?

I think another thing in play is that Trump was never very popular in Utah or with Mormons in general. That may put Chaffetz in an even tighter bind - his party is (so far) willing to go to the mat for Trump, but his state and his religion are far less committed.

He can buck Trump and still be supported in his state and religion, which cannot be said for most Republicans (yet). He'll be open for a run at the Senate or Governor, still relatively untarnished.

If one goes conspiratorial mode, perhaps Chaffetz already has critical info on Trump due to his position in the investigative committee, and knows that now is the time to jump ship. Which again, due to his position as a Utah Mormon, he can do now without losing much support, unlike most of the members of his party.

The other conspiracy theory is that someone, somewhere, uncovered a skeleton in Chaffetz's closet and is blackmailing him, or Chaffetz is aware that someone is going to file some sort of lawsuit against him, with real evidence and a real chance of winning.

No evidence so far to support any of the conspiracy theories.

Interesting. They all seem plausible.

I hope he found out something about Trump. And then decided to jump ship rather than be in a position where he has to choose between covering it up and doing his job.

He may have accepted laundered Russian money, and then the Russians used that fact to blackmail him. And the FBI may be investigating him for this.

Sounds pretty tin foil hat and all but at the same time plausible. Maybe I just want it to be true because I hate that ****.

Chaffetz dropping out of his political life is in response to a powerful stimulus.
Some think it could be an affair, but many have weathered that particular storm,
even the most religious of them.

I mean, what happened to that special mission to put that crook Hillary
behind bars for her criminal acts?

Surely, there is nothing more important than more congressional hearings?

Yeah, right.
Words fail me for the kind of ******** that is this administration.

I want to believe ten million dollar payment is true, because there would be
no mistake about the fraud perpetrated by criminals on this country.

Hopefully, Chaffetz is just the first rat to jump ship (leaving his up and coming
political career) that will try, unsuccessfully, to distance themselves from this
administration.

I can't see how foot surgery would keep him out of Washington, missing critical votes, for weeks. They have surgeons in the DC area. Good ones, no doubt. And wheel chairs. And if he feels the need to be operated on at home, airplanes. Handicapped people ride on them all the time.
