James B. of the Screw Loose Change Blog (and this forum) debated Jason Bermas on the internet radio show Final Round on Friday, February 6.

The entire show is 2 hrs. and 43 mins. in length. After an obnoxious three minute opening, the debate runs to about and hour and fifty minutes and the rest is a listener call in segment. Both J.B.'s were calling in by phone and the sound quality is not optimal.

The entire show mp3 can be found here.

I made a video edit of the relevant part of the show minus the obstreperous opening and the listener call in part at the end after the J.B.’s are finished. It runs one hour and forty seven minutes.

The consensus of commentators on the SCL blog who have listened to the show is that Bermas took over by butting in and speaking at great length with the help of the host.

After the debate, the host does mention Bermas dominating the show (that part is not in the video) and says it was James’ fault for not speaking up or giving longer and more detailed answers. It sounded to me like he was covering his ass as a host but you can be the judge of that yourself.

Edit: Some NSFW language.

I love that Bermas says the turning point for him to become a "Truther" was seeing a urinal target with Osama Bin Laden's face on it at his old high school.

9-11 debates are soooooo 2006.

Honestly folks, is there really a point any more? We obviously won the debate a long time ago.

Ya but I never knew that JB was inspired by a urnial cake!
I mean if I had known that from the beginning then maybe I would have supported them!

Ironically, one of the stalls in that same bathroom had "9/11 was not an inside job" scrawled on it. If only Bermas had needed to go number two instead, his life may have taken a wholly different course.

Why so Serious?

James Bennett's contributions to the debunking camp have been invaluable. But, debating a truther in 2009 only gives them the oxygen they need to keep the fire burning. It's time to stop dignifying trutherisms with the attention they crave. Just tell Bermas once he articulates his hypothesis, then we'll talk. Until then there's nothing to talk about. The days of 'MOLTEN METAL, TOTAL PROOF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!' are over.

Indeed. I think there should be no more debates until an actual alternate theory exists.

And I mean names, times, dates, locations, materials, etc etc.

No more debating that "the official story doesn't hold up". Its time for the truthers to provide an alternate, intricate, precise, detailed theory... or shut the hell up.

I actually turned them down the first offer, and took over a month to finally accept. I am still somewhat ambivilant. Given that every single one of the callers challenged Bermas, and this debate has not shown up on a single truther site, not even loosechange911, I seriously doubt it will inspire them much.

They don't mind getting humiliated, as long as they get their unwarranted attention. Richard Dawkins isn't exactly anxious to debate VenomFangX, is he?

As a general principle it doesn't make a lot of sense to me to debate Truthers on their own shows, but not because we're giving them attention or helping their cause out in any way. It's because we're probably not reaching any fence-sitters.

But it's always useful for more debunkers to get a little media experience, and James has mostly let me handle the radio appearances for SLC, so it's good that he got the experience, especially against somebody as media savvy as Bermas.

Plus I am hoping to get at least one entertaining YouTube out of it.

That Bermas sure is media savvy. He's got the perfect face for radio.

Anybody going to discuss the 911 related material of the program, or do I move this to community so you can mock the people?

Chill,

Part of the discussion on all these things, these days, is whether or not debate is a good thing, needed, or not.

I know we are not discussing the debate itself, but that is half the point. The topics, for the most part, have been covered over and over.

Given the only person being "attacked" is not a member, just like George Bush is not a member, is there room for a little slack here?

Thanks

TAM:)

That's not what's happening here either, though.

This is the 911 CT section. Either post on topic regarding 911 and the surrounding CTs, or threads will be moved.

I'm about halfway through this one but it sounds like Bermas is getting an awful lot more talk time than James is. He's throwing a lot of strawman arguments out there too..such as with the drones "are you saying the military has never used drones?"...etc.

Bermas' goal was apparently to talk as long as possible, making as many various claims as possible such that it would take forever for James to address each one.

I loved that Bermas still claimed that the pentagon was "the most secure/protected building in the world".

Production values on this one are POOR! Lots of computer IM sounds going on throughout the show, and both guests dropped a few times. No call screener, which is probably why non-truthers got through.

Did I hear Bermas say that he's starting a new radio show in an attempt to reach College/High School kids?

Yeah, I must say that I am impressed by Bermas' ability to drone on forever. I kept trying to interrupt, but could never get a word in edgewise. I wanted to ask him some questions, but had to give that up, because if I did, he wouldn't answer and would never stop talking.

James,
You did good with what they gave you man. I'm sure other radio shows out there, like the AJ show, would have made it even more difficult to get a word in. You should really give it another try with a better host, and maybe narrow down the topics. I wonder if Bermas or another truther would be willing to debate you with Pomeroo as the host again?
