It's official Barbra Streisand is scum

https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2019/mar/23/michael-jackson-barbra-streisand-leaving-neverland

“You can say ‘molested’, but those children, as you heard say, they were thrilled to be [at Jackson’s Neverland ranch]. They both married and they both have children, so it didn’t kill them.”

I doubt she'll be blacklisted

Truly despicable, no doubt. Never gave a damn for her to begin with, but this blithe dismissal is really disgusting. The same dismissal would apply to most child molestations, I'd think. Children who are molested are often first thrilled at the attention (even if it's not quite so exciting as Neverland) and perhaps most recover enough to live relatively normal lives, like getting married and reproducing.

Streisand isn't much in the public eyes these days, so I don't know how much attention this comment will receive, but I'd doubt we see many defend her.

I will "defend" her. To me it is less of a dismissal, and more bizarre and ignorant. There is enough weirdness in there that it sounds more like she never bothered to put much thought into what molestation even is.

I've always disliked Barbara Streisand. I mean, she's a philanthropist, good for her, but I wouldn't want to hang out with her. I don't understand what her precise point is here, but she sounds like an idiot.

I don't know what MJ did or didn't do (and I don't really think about it much anymore because he's dead and we'll never know for sure), but it doesn't matter. She's not defending him; she seems to be implying that molestation is no big deal and that if someone recovers from it enough to get married someday, it wasn't really harmful or doesn't "count." Which makes zero sense. Either she was once molested herself and copes with it weirdly, or she has no idea what the accusations against MJ actually are. Or, I suppose, she just has terrible views.

Shouldn't this be in the colossal MJ thread?

EDIT: Oh my god! I just read the whole article in addition to the excerpt. WTF, is she getting senile? Does she not know what pedophilia actually is? I can't make sense of these remarks. "His sexual needs are his sexual needs," FFS. Someone needs to get her to say what the hell that means. She's quite dodgy.

In my experience, a lot of people hold these views. I've heard many times that "back in my day everyone had a funny uncle" and "children weren't shielded from the facts of life" and "boys were expected to have experience before marriage".

I think a lot of people from previous generations failed to understand the consequences of abuse, failed to recognize the signs and symptoms for what they are, and tended to see it as merely distasteful or unethical rather than destructive and sinister.

You make a good point, but how sad. :(

.....

There's no real doubt that MJ was a serial pedophile. Multiple victims have described his conduct in sordid detail, and during his life he paid out multi-million-dollar civil settlements. It might be reasonable to debate whether his music and creativity can be assessed separately from his crimes, but the crimes are real.

Can be assessed separately?

Let me try....boom...I just did it. I just made an assessment separate from his crimes. I guess that is resolved, too.

We have a mega-thread already going about that debate. The reason I have no opinion on it is that I can't bear reading the point-counterpoint that would lead me to form one. This stuff is just too gross. I'm getting more sensitive as I get older (which is odd - I would have thought it'd be the other way around), and I've found I'm reacting more strongly to reading upsetting things. I started to read one article that talked about a kid describing splotches on MJ's penis, and I just slammed my laptop closed. I can't handle it anymore.

I thought what happened was still pretty uncertain (based on things I've heard), but I certainly didn't mean to be disrespectful. I have very little info here and no particular desire to defend Jackson.

She knows what molestation is, and there is no "weirdness". She's just a repulsive individual.

You've heard people say that back in their day, preteen boys were expected to let their funny uncles jerk them off so they wouldn't be shielded from the facts of life?

Interesting.

People, people who are molested by famous people
Are the luckiest people in the world!

I love it when celebrities put their ignorance and/or stupidity on public display.
