It's away! Deep Impact impactor probe separation is successful.

I think it is a crime. What right do we have to harm that comet? None, whatsoever. It isn't ours. It doesn't belong to us. This is criminal. I'm demanding a senate investigation

/parody of a thread I read here some weeks back.

No, I wouldn't bother looking even if I had the optics to do so. I'll catch the webcast though.

"Tempel" is an anagram of "pelt me." It's just asking for it!
/playing along.

I'm reminded of what Phil Plait said so passionately at TAM3 (w/r/t the Titan landing):

"Look at what we've done!"

Arrrg! I'm getting audio from the NASA site, but no video. Put some more images up, willya?

Oooooooo!

Aaaaaaah!

That thing looks freaky... a little like a skull or something.

Being one of the few 'land' places something might actually be seen, I hauled the kids out to a darker sky site off A1 Mountain Road hoping to see something. (Yes, the steak sauce is named after a ranch near here).

-sigh- Rats. Several meteors and a satellite but still could not locate the comet.

Looking at the on-line images from Kitt peak (Tuscon). I'm starting to suspect this baby is pretty hard to spot without a really big scope.

Some elapsed time images here:

Nasa and space.com seem dos'd right now.

The kids weren't too disappointed, the sky was great viewing tonight. They want to try and see something another night.

Well, Kopji
living on the slopes of haleakala, I got a pretty good look at it, not as cool as the JPL pics, but I did get to see it. looks like a little grey star from where I'm at (Ha'iku)

SWEET!

Now we just have to wait for the number crunching to see what's been learned.

May it go well and speedily.

Ahh, I just love this. This is science in it's best! I gladly pay tax to see these projects teach us more about the world and the universe.
