It was hilarious.

I herd the justification this morning. Apparently Grayling was taking into account the fact that Dannatt's position was at odds with that of the Labour party on defence matters. So, for Labour to have appointed him as defence advisor would have been a gimmick. However, as his views are aligned with those of the Conservative party, for them to appoint him to that role is a publicity coup.
