It looked like a ufo, but wasn't

In August of 1978, my wife and I were traveling in northwestern Kansas on state highway 18 on the way to visit her parents.
We saw a golden colored, cigar shaped object that fit what seemed to be the parameters of a ufo sighting.
As we drove westward, very little traffic there, we watched the object for a very long time. Suddenly, it turned and the colored changed to silver and it left a jet trail.
We could see that it was a jet plane.
Later, that weekend, we were returning home to Hutchinson, Kansas. On a street on the west side of town we saw a number of people jumping out of their cars and pointing to the west. There was another object that looked liked the one we had seen earlier in the weekend.
We went on home certain that it was simply another jet.
The next morning, a Sunday, the newspaper headlines were: UFO SIGHTED BY HUTCHINSON RESIDENTS.
 
well obviously, while you were busy being distracted by those jets, a real ufo flew behind you.

With respect, if you are interested in unusual objects in the sky to the point where you would spend that amount of time pondering on what it is, then I suggest that you carry a pair of binoculars with you in the car. It would save an enormous amount of wasted time.
 
We were not looking for anything when we spotted the object. It was by chance that we saw it and wondered what it was.

I can understand that your want to look at the sky but even in Kansas... maybe you should spend some time watching the road. ;)

Occam says "the sun was reflecting off yet another jet".

(Not sure what you want us to say... that was 29 years ago.)
