Islamophobes boycott Campbell's Soup

I saw that article earlier today. Apparently they blame the organization that's doing the certifying because of alleged terrorist ties. At least, the informal leaders of the boycott claim that's their reason. They say it has nothing to do with Halal. So if another group did the certifying, then presumably they would not have a problem.

The certification agency probably has ties to lots of extremist groups. After all, terrorists have to eat too.

What's sweet on my end is I can get patriot points for not eating something I don't eat anyhow. I love it when I'm already boycotting something just by happenstance. (Waiting for rutabaga to make the list.)

Are you really that naive? From the article:
Blogger Pamela Geller began calling for a boycott earlier this month via her widely read site, Atlas Shrugs. Other bloggers soon joined in.
Leave it to Geller to find another "reason" to call for a boycott. She's quoted as not being against halal food, but that's hypocritical, as she's against Muslims living in the US at all.

As to the certifying organization:
ISNA, an organization based in Plainfield, Ind., was designated an "unindicted co-conspirator" in the prosecution of a charitable organization that funneled money to Hamas,
Isn't that in fact a form of defamation? "We think you're also guilty but we're not going to prosecute you". Great.

This is no different than those lunatics who go on about a "Jewish tax" on foods that get a Kosher or parve certification.

But heaven forbid you call it by its rightful name--bigotry.

Not if it's true.
You're right. But then, why not prosecute them as well if you can prove it?

If this can be called islamophobia, I guess boycotting Israeli products can be called antisemitism.
Funny. Nobody called it Islamophobia. The thread title says that islamophobes started the boycott. There's a fine distinction. And the OP called them losers. I posited that Pam Geller was less than honest in her statements. But actually, I think this is not just Islamophobia: it's Islam-hatred. Especially in the form as espoused on the Facebook group, where the original "reason", viz. the alleged terrorist ties of the certifying body, have been left out.

Your comparison with an Israel boycott is ludicrous. It's not anti-semitism to boycott Israel for Israeli policies. You seem to forget the distinction between Jews and the state of Israel. The remark of the French minister that a boycott be a "crime" is even more ludicrous. People are entitled to "vote with their feet". You may find those people losers or loonies, you may disagree with their reasons, but calling for a boycott is a right in a free country.

Yeah, we all know Thunder is very subtle in his choice of words.

It's not anti-semitism to boycott Israel for Israeli policies.

It is antisemitism if you focus your outrage solely on the only Jewish state in the world. Do these people boycott Saudi Arabia? Sudan? Burma? Iran? China? No, their only focus is Israel. Wonder why.

I am with you, and I will buy another can to say thank you for their support feeding the workers down at ground zero back during that terrible time

No, it's ridiculous.

I agree. There was a similar freak out a couple years ago when Rachel Ray wore a scarf that Michelle Malkin swore was a sign of the Intifada.

I hope we agree on one thing, "hidden conspiracies" like the Truthers or the Birthers or the imminent Muslim or Jewish takeover or Sharia law in Dearborn are silly and destructive. I sometimes talk about my "teabagger" neighbor but one time we were going out for dinner and he started ranting about how Muslims were breeding with the sole intent of world domination and that we had to stop it! NOW! I told him it was the same way they talk about us Jews. He couldn't seem to understand the similarity.

The article says the soups in question will only be sold in Canuckistan, so the Teabaggers should just relax.

Maybe they can't prove it beyond reasonable doubt to a jury. It still could be true.

They never charged Capone with most of his crimes. But he was guilty of far more than tax evasion, and everyone knew it.

If one is in the mood to draw such fine distinctions, one should note that there's no evidence that Geller is afraid of Islam. Quite the contrary: she seems quite willing to challenge it openly and directly. One could claim she's bigoted against Islam, but afraid of it? Nope, not in evidence. If you want to find people who are afraid of Islam, look to people who actually back down in the face of threats (or even anticipation of threats) from the religion of peace.

I think the term "Islamophobe" is misused. The people who are boycotting Cambell's soup for having halal food are not Islamophobes. They are simply bigots.

They hate Muslims for their silly clothes and strange ways and bizzare religion, so they find a phoney-baloney excuse of "national security", much like some people hate Jews and find the excuse of "dual loyalty" or whatever.

The Islamophobes are the likes of the Washington Post, the New York Times, and other folks who dare not run certain cartoons or photos because they are afraid Muslims will kill them.
