A family friend has a pool but his mate wouldn't get it because it uses
ozone. He says it's toxic and has been banned in the USA. Should I get in?

It's also used in spas here in Australia. I guess if it's dangerous in pools, it'd be even more dangerous in spas.
We're thinking about buying one!

Does anyone have any reliable information about this?

I think Ozone itself is safe and is commonly used as an alternative in pools to kill bacteria from chlorine. Ozone when used this way decays quickly in the water and then is completly unnoticable. Also it's used to clean foods before being eaten so I'd think it is safe.

You might be thinking of Tropospheric ozone which is in the air and which is a pollutant and is banned in aresol products.

I don't have any sources but you might want to try google.

The bent O3 molecule is (as one could imagine) a potent oxidant and is recognized as a pollutant. For the former reason it is used in pools and spas is as a disinfectant as a replacement for chlorine type bleaches. As to the health risks posed by O3 in a spa I couldn’t tell you – they are probably of the same order as the older chemicals used. Of course, with an ozone generator you don’t need to store dangerous chemicals in your garage as O3 is generated from atmospheric oxygen. (Does anyone remember pouring engine oil onto pool chlorine? Now that was dangerous.)

In a pool? No more so than the chlorine it replaces. In the air? Yeah, it's not very good for you. But it doesn't make it out of the pool to where you can breathe it very much. It's banned in the US for it to be emitted by an "air cleaner," but not in pools.
