Is Norton 360 crap?

I'm just wondering 'cos it started throwing up some "HTTP TDServ Requests" and telling me they were blocked and nothing to worry about - then i decided to google them and found out that actually they're a signature of quite a nasty infection. So i downloaded some progs which discovered a virus hidden on system32.

Is Norton itself not very good, or is it as good as any of the other AVS out there?

It's always been an absolute hog, although I understand it's not as bad as it used to be, but I don't recall having heard that it has bad detection rates. Basically, I'm told it's not as bad as it used to be, but that's not saying much. There are others that are better and cheaper. Kaspersky usually comes out well in detection tests. MSE and (to a lesser extent) AVG come out well in value for money.

Anything from Symantec is crap. That seems to be the whole of Symantec's business—buying up great pieces of software and turning them into crap.

Peter Norton foolishly sold them, not only his line of products, but his name and his image. Back in his time, he was one of the Great Ones, but now, thanks to Symantec, his name and image are associated with crap.

Thanks for the responses - and i didn't realise the tags could be clicked on to sort other threads....that's quite useful!

From the advice i think i might let my norton subscription run out and get something better.....

Part of the issue is that if your machine already had a malware hook in it then it probably has subverted Norton.

When was the last time you built up the OS? Was your machine infected with a rootkit before?

What virus did it find? (Curious.)
