If anyone recognize this - please help me:

I regulary get messages from "Messenger" about "windows critical system errors" (and that is plain BS) and referres to pages like: repaimyxp.com, regfixit.com, dlpatch.com, update32.com etc... There is _no_ _chance_ _ever_ that Im visiting those sites!

It is stopping some downloads and terminate certain programs that I run when Im on the internet as well. It pops up every fifth minute so it is really p*****g me off!!!
I have used Spybot, Nod32, Lavalys Everest and WebWasher to identify and find a way to get rid of it, but it does not work...

Can anyone tell me what it is and if there is any way to get rid of it??
It just drives me nuts!!

As I suspected - a "security hole" that is the trademark of Bills wretched software...

Thanxalot BlackCat!

I've had this happen before, and it got so bad, (every ten seconds or so), that I couldn't run anything at all. I wound up having to reinstall windows to get rid of it, but this is probably because I never got rid of messenger...

There are 2 messengers - Microsoft Messenger, the instant messenger program, and the Messenger Service.

The first doesn't do this when you don't login to the service (not sure about after) but I do recommend removing it if you don't use it.

The second was used as a way of notifying users of particular events across the network. Most commonly users saw it when printing from Windows, the print servers would send a notice to the uesr when their document was out of the queue.

Windows 2000 print servers and up have this notification off by default so the usefulness of the Messenger Service has pretty much disappeared. Add in the spam messages and you're best bet is to just disable the service.

There's a good chance also that you are infected with Spyware. I strongly advise downloading SpyBot and giving your system a scan.

What they said, about the messenger service.
Except that can't prevent you from downloading anything, or in fact impinge on your life in any way whatsoever except for popping up a little box with a message and an OK button. So whatever's knocking your coconuts over is something else.

I think he already tried that. They keep on coming up with new spam faster than Mr Spybot can fix them.

A good idea is to keep Windows up to date with the auto update service. It patches those holes as soon as they are found out, and also has a spam remover.

Can I also recommend Spywareblaster, a free download from Javacool software that runs in the background and prevents 95% of this rubbish getting on in the first place. You can also update it for free pretty much every week and keep the nonsense to a minimum on your system. Half my day at work is sometimes taken up with cleaning spyware off laptops, it's far more of a menace than most people think.

Fixed!

I turned off Messenger Service, and the problem is gone! Seemed to do the trick ... :)
I have Spybot and NOD32 (a very good antivirus system btw), plus the programs that came with my adsl-provider (antispy, duble firewall and some more). I also use Lavalys Everest Ultimate Edition (an exellent program that gives complete control over your computer) so this problem was a thorn in my side. But not anymore!
I am a bit of a controlfreak when it comes to my computer "hygiene", but I think thats a good thing really...

Thanks for the help! :)

I prefer my own antivirus and antispamware service (the two are one and the same to me). Basically it involves a crack military (esqu) team that tracks down, tortures, and kills all who create and spread malware, and they make no distinction between the actual perpetrator and the families of them. They always finish with a thorough burning of the guilty party's house to serve as a warning to others.

My malware issues have dropped pretty significantly thanks to this service and I haven't had to bother with e-mail filters.

Geez, man, talk about mean...

With all this garbage that's rearing its ugly head, I would recommend from all my vast windows experience that if this occurs, you format the drive THEN re-install windows. Usually when windows Messenger service starts popping up, that usually means you have been hit by spyware and malware. I would also recommend that you get GhostSurf by Tenebril. I use it and I've had no problems with spyware and malware.

That messenger service is not a spyware or virus, it's inbuilt feature. It drove me nuts until I found out how to turn it off. Mostly it asked if I wanted to buy fake PhD-diploma but I already have a genuine thank you. I have a weak memory of another ad that offered how to turn off the stupid messenger serive, once they had given me the idea however I could Google it and turn it off for free.

Sounds like a fair punishment to me... :)

I almost consider it as a virus (or a "malware") because of it´s combination of uselessness and irritating misuse. As long as King Bill rules the PCWorld we have to deal with it...
