Wildlife artist is gored to death by buffalo

A British wildlife artist whose works are owned by the Royal Family has died in Africa after being gored by a buffalo while walking with his wife.



Simon Combes, 64, was killed in Kenya's Great Rift Valley when he was charged by the one-ton animal that threw him to the ground, stamped on him and then ripped open his torso with its horns.

He had to wait two hours for medical help to arrive and died shortly before a helicopter could airlift him to hospital.

Mr Combes's daughter, Cindy, 35, said: "The buffalo just came from nowhere.

How odd. And how does the mighty predatory buffalo sneak up on one? Tiptoe? Very, very odd.
 
Not sure if it was this type but the Cape Buffalo is often referred to as "the black death".
 
Right, but this guy apparently was not a tourist, he had spent his life out there, right? Just strikes me as odd.

While they behave differently on the ground, once airborne, both varieties are equally dangerous. Noone's gotten close enough to observe if any are laden with coconuts.

The African version of everything is deadly, venomous, and outlandishly viscious. I've heard that the African garden slug can digest a man in his sleep.

I agree. If the year was 1793, and the man was a poacher who hunted buffalo, and just happened to be looking the other way and emptying his bladder at the time, then it would be ironic.

Indeed, and like American Bison are really very, err, contentious animals, ones that weigh a ton, have sharp horns, a bad attitude, and run about 35 miles per hour for short distances.

All in all, a bad deal to meet up with on a path.

Look at injuries in Yellowstone NP, for instance.
