Iraqi Parliament Approves SOFA

Well just looks to me like our troops will be sliding over to Afghanistan with Obama heading the charge.

Atleast this is good for our situation with Iraq....Good for them as a people as well!

Iraqi Parliament Approves SOFA

Good. In return I approve ARMCHAIR and OTTOMAN.
COUCH also.

I will now offer you BARSTOOL as adendum I to the SOFA agreement. It comes with a free case of beer. :)

DR

I accept BARSTOOL with the understanding that, should it prove necessary, support will be provided by BAR. With regards to staffing and personnel issues, BAR/maid is preferable to BAR/tender.

Hee hee. Little do the Iraqis know but the agreement is not binding on the US.

It's an agreement between the Bush Administration and Iraq.

The Constitution said:
[The President] shall have Power, by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, to make Treaties, provided two thirds of the Senators present concur

It's not a treaty. It is a SOFA. Status of Forces Agreement. The US has SOFA's with quite a few nations where we have troops stationed, more or less permanently. See Japan Germany, Italy, for starters.

For the love of god, don't bring the OTTOMAN into this. That's how the Middle East got so screwed up in the first place, and that's why we need a SOFA now.

But the ARMCHAIR is fine. And they could probably use a LOVESEAT too.

Well to be totally fair it was the dividing up of the OTTOMAN that caused the problem, not the OTTOMAN itself.

Fine. But I don't think it obligates the US too keep troops in Iraq for longer than the President decides to keep them there.

And at least in the case of Japan, the SOFA appears to be part of a treaty:

Agreement Under Article VI of the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between the United States of America and Japan, Regarding Facilities and Areas and the Status of U.S. Armed Forces in Japan
19th January, 1960

The United States of America and Japan, pursuant to Article VI of the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between the United States of America and Japan signed at Washington on January 19, 1960, have entered into this Agreement in terms as set forth below:

Nor would a treaty, most likely. If Obama want to leave more quickly, I don't think this SOFA would stop him. It only covers what to do about certain things regarding those forces who are there.

That SOFA, if I recall my p's and q's correctly, is subordinate to a treaty. It isn't a treaty.

Deleted because I was waaaaay late for the joke and others beat me to it.

Some day, when nobody is expecting it, I will exact my terrible revenge!
