“Speaking on state-run radio, Iran's envoy to OPEC said his country was ready to send up to five shiploads of crude oil to the US. But he said this could only happen if US sanctions were lifted first.”

What do you think? Is this just a ploy to make the US look bad, when they have no real choice but to refuse? Or is it a:

“…rare gesture of good will”?

It's not a gesture of good will but rather a business proposition....oil in exchange of the lifting of sanctions.

But presumably when you make a business proposition you believe that there is a reasonable chance of it being successful. I'm guessing the US does not need the oil that badly, and that this is known to the Iranian government.

The flaw in your reasoning is that you are starting with the assumption that the leaders of Iran are rational.

Good point.

I don't get it. Are you saying it really is a straightforward business proposal as suggested by Number Six?

My first thought was that it is an attempt to make the US appear stubborn and unreasonable when they refuse this "rare gesture of good will".

I am saying that the leaders of Iran are ignorant whack-jobs, who took a break away from praying to Allah and torturing their own citizens long enough to say "Hey, I've got an idea! I bet if we offer the US oil, they'll do anything we ask! Great idea! God is great! God is great! God is great!"

Silly. They're not idiots. They may be fundamentalists but that doesn't preclude them from being politically astute.

I would prefer that Iran also include some compensation for the US embassy workers that were taken hostage way back ....

Huh? How would this make the US look bad? And how is this a rare gesture of good will? Five boatloads seems like an incredibly small price to pay, so I think that neither "rare" now "goodwill" are appropriate descriptors. And labeling it "Katrina" oil relief is just posturing; Katrina has nothing to do with it, other than providing a pretext.
