iPad coming to Verizon...iPhone incoming?

In other news, it seems to me that this would foreshadow a Verizon iPhone announcement sometime soon.
It seems to me that rumors of a Verizon iPhone have floated so often that it's become the Duke Nukem Forever of the cell phone world and therefore isn't worth discussing except as a joke.

I realize there have been rumors since the iPhone came out. For me it seems that all the pieces are falling into line for the announcement of a Verizon iPhone in the near future (I imagine they will want several months of time from the announcement to the release to get the hype and news building up and that's my rational for them announcing it at latest by the first quarter of 2011). This news of the Verizon iPad is important because it shows they can and are working together. And with a new os being released soon (Win7) across all carriers and the continued growth of Android I think Apple knows they can't keep up their AT&T exclusivity much longer without losing many potential/frustrated customers.

That scenario is extremely unlikely. Apple would be actively hosing AT&T by doing that/letting that happen, to the point that they could probably be sued for it. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a provision in the Apple/AT&T contracts specifically addressing that issue.

It's the same reason most companies avoid announcing upgrades to existing products too long before release: It cannibalizes sales of the current version.

I don't doubt that the iPhone will be available for other services at some point but when it happens I think there will be little to no warning. It'll be "Oh BTW, iPhone will be available on Verizon[/T-Mobile/Sprint/whatever] next week."

Precisely. That's how Apple rolls, and it'll definitely be a requirement from them if they were going to bring their product to another provider. Further, Apple is just the type of company to put a clause in their contract to keep things mum, and pull the deal if it gets leaked.

That's not a statement on whether we'll see a VZ iPhone-- I think it's inevitable, just a matter of time-- it's just something to expect in the conditions around when it comes out. This won't be a telegraphed release.

I was envisioning Apple announcing it in advance (at one of their events) instead of Verizon. I don't know about this idea of an almost instant release after they drop the bomb. And whenever it is announced it is going to be a giant bomb in the face of Microsoft and Google. I think they have to give Verizon customers (or potential customers) time to know that the iPhone is coming and to get their plan/account in order before its released. I think it's only to Apple's advantage to announce it months in advance. And depending on the timing they could totally put Microsoft's face in it (ie announcing it next week before Win7 launches...not that it has a chance of happening but it would be a huge FU to Microsoft).
