I read an article on slashdot that Internet hunting may be banned in some states in the US. Internet hunting? Now I'm no hunter, but I don't have a big downer on those who get their pleasure from killing bambi either. But come on guys. At least get your fat ass out into the woods.

*chuckle* Well...

I'm not sure about hunting internets, but I will say that if you aren't going to use the meat, then why bother? Bambi's damned tasty.

NPR's All Things Considered did a fairly balanced piece on this. The first guy to sign up was an avid hunter who had become a paraplegiac as a result of an auto accident.

He seemed quite enthused about the prospect of manuevering his camera/rifle over the internet. (he did not "bag" any game)

I do feel that it's rather...wierd. Still, for some, I can sort of see the attraction. But couldn't you just buy a copy of Deer Hunter or one of the other hunting games?

Is it possible to sign on and take control of a gun anonymously?

The implications if one can maneuver a human into the line of fire, or if one winds up there accidentally, are frightening.

I object to the idea of shooting animals by remote control, but the argument "That's not really hunting" doesn't satisfy... it bothers me on a deeper level than whether there's a pure hunting experience involved. I just can't put my finger on it.

Apparently this is a rather small operation. The weapon is in a "blind" in a fee hunting area, connected to a camera, and a fixed mount that lets the operator aim it over the internet. (I wonder if there's any lag....)

As the weapon is in a fixed location and presumably no one would be wandering around "downrange", it should be reasonably safe.

Kind of reminds me of the high-tech remote-control weapon used by the assasin in the remake of "The Jackal".
