Greetings. Any help would be appreciated:

1) I can't change the default home page setting in my browser. The things you should click on to do that are "highlighted out"-- in other words, it won't let me click on the button to change it.

Any ideas what to do?

2) Since getting a cable modem and using IE more now (since I dropped compuserve, it seems like a get a lot more popups.

But, these popups appear just by opening the frickin' browser (as opposed to clicking on some site)

Any idea on how to turn them off / prevent this?

TIA

1. To change you default homepage, you go to Tools > Internet Options. At the top of the window is a text box that shows your current default homepage, you just change the text and click OK.

2. I'm sorry, I'm too crappy with computers to fix your popup problem but I suggest Popup Blocker or similar program.

Yeah, I'd run both AdAware and SpyBot to make sure you haven't been hijacked.

The easiest way to set your home page is to visit that page, and then drag the icon next to the page URL up to the home page tool in the toolbar (it looks like a little house).

bpesta,

Just to be clear... You're running Internet Explorer and not MSN Explorer. Correct?

Is this the regular IE or a special that came with the cable service?

When my DSL account was sold to yahoo one of the "benefits" on offer was a specially customized browser with the home page fixed to yahoo.

I'd not be surpised at other broadband suppliers being equally slimy.

bpesta,

Are you comfortable tinkering with the registry? If not, maybe you know someone who is? I've found a solution at Scot's Newsletter forums.

Always use extreme caution when tinkering with the registry. You could hose the whole system if you don't know what you're doing.

Have you tried reinstalling IE?

If you have XP this might work:Turn Off the Windows Messenger Service

NOTE: You must be an administrator or a member of the administrators group, to disable this service.

When enabled, the Windows Messenger Service allows pop-ups, like the one shown below, to appear on your screen.
Notice the Messenger Service title listed at the top of the window.

Microsoft Windows Messenger Service pop-up

NOTE: Disabling the Windows Messenger Service will not affect the functionality of AOL Instant Messenger™, Yahoo® Messenger, MSN® Messenger, or other chat programs you may have on your system.

To turn off the Windows Messenger Service, perform the following steps:

Click the Start button, then click the Control Panel icon.
The Control Panel window appears.

In the left windowpane, click the Switch to Classic View option.

Double-click the Administrative Tools icon.
The Administrative Tools window appears.

Double-click the Services icon.
The Services window appears.

Scroll down the list in the right windowpane, and double-click the Messenger listing.
The Messenger Properties window appears.

Click the drop-down button next to the Startup type: listing.

Click to select the Manual listing.

Locate the Service status: listing and click the Stop button.

Messenger Properties window

The Service Control window appears briefly.
The Windows Messenger Service has now been disabled.

Click the Apply button.

Click the OK button.

Close the Services window.

In the Administrative Tools window, click the Back button.
The Control Panel window appears.

In the left windowpane, click the Switch to Category View option.

Close the Control Panel window.

If this problem was the result of clicking "Reset Web Settings" located on the "programs" tab of the Internet Explorer options window, then an FYI.

When you click the "Reset Web Settings" button, it resets the default Internet Explorer settings for your home and search pages, and prompts to make Internet Explorer your default browser.

However!

Clicking the button only resets the settings IF YOU HAVE INSTALLED ANOTHER WEB BROWSER AFTER installing Internet Explorer and Internet Tools, and that browser has changed the default settings.

So, if clicking the Reset button did change your default home and search pages, then you must have installed another Web browser on your machine in addition to IE.

Is this so?
Open IE, click help, about IE. what is the version of IE listed?
