"Intelligent" Design in Italy

-With apologies to any real German speakers who may be here.

"Italian Minister of Education , Letizia Moratti has decided that in State primary and middle schools, only the biblical model of creation may now be taught;- that man was created by God and the first woman from one of the man's ribs.
Henceforth, the teaching of Darwin's theory of evolution will be dropped. This decision, which appears in her official government office publication, is considered to be a concession to the conference of catholic bishops.

Meanwhile, resistance is rising in Italy among educationalists and scientists. CNR, the National Institute of Science, is considering an appeal to the Constitutional Court. Erasing evolutionary theory from the syllabus contradicts the position of research, argues the CNR, as well as the secular principle embedded in the Italian Constitution."

That seems very strange as I thought the Catholic church didn't have a problem with evolution. I thought the official position was something like: Any interpretation of the bible that contradicts scientific fact must be the wrong interpretation, not the other way around.

Vatican2 stated that the Roman catholic church officially accepted Big Bang and Evolution as method in which god created the world and man.

Note of caution- My German is as rusty as a razor blade under Uri Geller's pyramid. I'd be happier if Zee German or someone checked my translation before we invade Italy.

Well, if it's any use I could lead the internal uprising, since I'm already in the country...

I'm surprised about this, too. I haven't heard about any big controversy here about this (though, to be fair, my Italian is still so lousy that I'd probably wouldn't understand it anyway). I also thought that the Catholic Chuch was pretty happy with evolution.

I would just say that there isn't as strict a state/religion separation in Italy as there is in the US, and there's still religious instruction in schools.
