Hello all!

There is an issue which I am having trouble documenting and I hope that someone at JREF may be able to help me out a bit.

Specifically, last night at dinner I got into a debate about exorcisms where I said something like “the Catholic Church does indeed still preform exorcisms and the Pope still occasionally approves of exorcisms”. However, I did not immediately have the data to substantiate my claim.

Now then, as I recall, the Catholic Church does currently provide a class for teaching their priests about exorcisms, and the Pope himself still occasionally approves of specific exorcisms. However, since these days the Papacy like to keep the public talk about demons and angels muted, I have found it difficult to find current data on the subject.

Therefore, if anyone can provide any fairly current investigative articles, research, and so on, as to just how the Catholic Church practices Exorcisms, then I sure would appreciate it if you could post such data here at JREF.

Thanks in advance.

Don't forget to pay the exorcists or they will come back and repossess your house.

I'm afraid I cannot offhand provide any examples of RCC or Anglican exorcisms however a couple of procedural notes:
1. All RCC and CoE dioceses are required to have a Diocesan Exorcist
2. Exorcisms require a license from the bishop of the diocese
3. The preferred terminology for Anglican churches is 'ministry of deliverance', e.g. here.

Exorcisms remain in the Catholic Doctrine, but are generally of a last resort. Priests will provide counseling and referrals to a therapist at first and strongly discourage the request of exorcists. At least within the catholic church. Within charismatic churches and sedevacantists, anything tends to go.
