Indian courts challenge Facebook, Google content

NEW DELHI - US companies Facebook, Google and Yahoo, and other internet firms, have been ordered by two Indian courts to remove material considered religiously offensive, the latest skirmish in a growing battle over website content in the world's largest democracy.
One court in the capital Delhi on Friday issued summons to 19 companies to stand trial for offences relating to distributing obscene material to minors, after being shown images it said were offensive to Hindus, Muslims and Christians, the PTI news agency said.
"The accused in connivance with each other and other unknown persons are selling, publicly exhibiting and have put into circulation obscene, lascivious content, Metropolitan Magistrate Sudesh Kumar said on Friday in the PTI report.
 
Christians and Mislims are offended? what, did an atheist write a book commanding atheist to stone theists?

Religious censorship in the world's largest democracy is a threat. It will quickly be emulated elsewhere.

Imagine the problems for global websites like this one.

Well the realities on the ground are a little more complex. The fact that a country as disparate as India has remained a secular democracy despite fundamentalists of all hues trying to undermine human rights suggests that we are doing something right. The fact is that there is a significant progressive populace in the country that works reasonably well to undermine these efforts. The ruling of local courts may be challenged, or as often happens in the country, things will continue as usual until everyone forgets about it.

Porn fans will resort to hard drive parties if porn on the web is blocked. A hard drive party is an event where every one brings a hard drive, has it scanned for malware and viruses, then offers the content to other party goers who want it. In return, he or she will take content from the other hard drives.

As for offensive language, young people will make up a lingo or novel spellings for what they want to say and bypass the censors. The Chinese example of just this sort of behavior can be seen in the rise of the Grass Mud Horse.
