Important moment for the Tea Party

I am of the opinion that the Tea Party is just a rebranding of a typical sort of populism on the right that pops up every now and again. When push comes to shove, they will fall in line with what the Republican bosses say.

If that's wrong, here is an important test:

In one of the funnier moments during his Rotary talk, Donohue was asked if Congress was going to raise the debt ceiling.

Yes, it will be raised, Donohue answered, mainly because the country can not afford to not pay its bills. To those newly-elected representatives who say they aren’t going to raise the debt ceiling and will shut down government, Donohue said the U.S. Chamber has its own message: “We’ll get rid of you.”

He then went on to praise U.S. House Speaker John Boehner for his Congressional leadership.

“He’s growing into his shorts,” Donohue said. “He’s put on his big boy pants.”

These are the real Republicans, the monied interests. Donohue is pretty clearly stating that the Tea Party is engaging in childish antics and eventually Congress will put on thier "big boy pants." In other words, ignore the Tea Party and do what's best for business.

Of course, raising the debt ceiling is good for everyone because it will be a unprecedented disaster if we default, but the Tea Party has taken up this debt ceiling thing as a big cause.

Will they fall in line or will they demand that Congress go with them? It's going to be interesting. I'd put my money on the rich guys, they have a long history of manipulating the demographic represented by the Tea Party.

Personally I love Conservatives vs. Tea Party. It's like watching zombies cannibalize each other. I'll be pool side with my feet up. Do let me know when the rabble are all dead won't you?

A better analogy might be Frankenstein and his monster. The republicans created them, now they get to see whether their attack dog will fall in line with GOP policies or tear them limb from limb.

Hey I'm a democrat. My party has been officially schizophrenic for decades. Let me have a little schadenfreude here!

I don't think it matters how they vote as they don't have enough votes to stop a raising of the debt ceiling. But I do agree that yes, they will eventually have to fall in line with more traditional Republican points of view.

I agree the ceiling will be raised, the only thing that worries me is how many "deals" the democrats will cut before the inevitable occurs.

As for the Tea Party, how can anyone take them seriously if they fall in line on this? All the bluster about not being Republicans, about having some new approach, is about to be torched (if it wasn't obvious already).

Will they actually hold their representatives to task? I'd be willing to bet we don't see a repeat of "Health Insurance Meltdown Summer '09" over this.

They're going to fall in line with people who are now openly mocking them. Fascinating. I'm sure they'll be more upset about Bill Maher calling them Teabaggers on his next show.

What criteria would be reasonable for assessing if they do (A) or (B)?

If they shut up about the debt ceiling and fall in line, they're just typical Republicans who got pissy for a summer. If they challenge their Congressional representatives at town hall meetings like they did with health care, if they refuse to compromise and go after Republicans who voted to increase the debt ceiling, or otherwise take action to show their displeasure, it will be more interesting.

As long as the "Tea Party" is just a subset of Republicans, whether they like it or not, the rich guys will always win. If they become a third party, it's more interesting.

I am hoping they schism, and that there is a lot of bad blood.

Then the Democrats control both the house and senate again without waiting for any elections.

If you think this would mean any significant changes in corporate influence in America, or even any sort of significant change in political climate, I really doubt you'd be correct.

Wouldn't be perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but at least we could deal with social issues more maturely--abotion, homosexual rights, religion in the schools...etc.

What really needs to happen is for the Republican party to cease to exist then have a two party system made up of Corporatist Democrats (who are essentially what Republicans were in the early 90's) and then an actual progressive party.

That would give an actual check and balance system that could lead to improved outcomes. As it is now, we have the Corporatist Democrats that the progressives have to get behind because they're terrified of the clinically insane Republicans.

Well, yes, status quo, but that is much better than making things much, much worse which we are apparently going to do if the GOP keeps pushing their propaganda points.

Maybe then the real democrats can take their party back without fear of losing a seat to the lunatic fringes of the Republicon party because the right would be split between the GOP and the TP, or the GOP will just re-emerge as two parties, one libertarian and the other fascist.

I'm hoping the Republican party basically comes to it's senses and kicks out the kooks. I would very much welcome the return of a more rational GOP from days gone by. But I'm not holding my breath.
