Illegal Immigrants Plan to Boycott May 1

Now if we could only get them to boycott the country rather than work.

So waddaya doin' for dinner Monday? Going out to Chez Paris? Gonna bus your own table?

There, now we're back to current events.

Are you not aware that this particular article is a satire? As for your inquiry as to my dinner plans; thanks Beep, but you're not my type.

Scrappleface is satire?

You mean Gonzales is not planning a "Day Without Miranda"?

Did anyone else know this?

Why do I get left out of everything?

Tsk. I look forward to Monday's boycott. You see, it isn't just the illegals that will be boycotting. Their apologists will as well.

I'm interested to see how it goes. I'm willing to bet that the media blitz will be hugr, but the economic blip will approach Plank's constant. Very much vocal participation, very little meaningful participation. Some schoolkids with dumb parents will get zeros for the day, some worker's will get fired, other than that, no impact.

I was just hoping to get a discussion started on Monday's boycott...:(

I think the whole point of the boycott is dumb. Most people who work those jobs only do it to make a living.

Sure, short term it'll make a difference, but medium-to-long term it's going to go unnoticed.

Heh. I think it'll depend on the relative participation of the illegals and their fan club. Basically, the more illegals participate the worse it'll be for the economy; the more their fellow travellers do the better. :D

It likely won't make that much of a difference short term. I have a friend who works in a local facotry that employs lots of immigrant labor. When they ahd the last big protest, there were enough workers gone to shut the factory down. However, they just had everyone work the following Saturday. So all it accomplished was giving everyone a day off in the middle of the week but making them give up their Saturday. From what I have heard, that was the case in a lot of local factories. I suspect that it was a common reaction all over and will be the same on Monday.

As for immigrants not buying anything, that will have less of an impact. If they want it or need it, they will still buy it, they'll just buy it on Sunday or Tuesday. Net effect, zero.

I think it will make a difference to the media
I think certain politicians will pander
I think some people will not show up for work.

I don't think it will have a measurable economic impact.

I SO think it will push a lot of hot buttons that maybe shouldn't be pushed.

I will be interesting.

I think it'll be counter-productive.

I think it'll be counter-productive.

Counter-productive to whom?

The illegals we love to hate, and hate to love.

Let's see what comes of this. I'm on record as thinking nothing economic will come of it and, unless the media/politicians make up something that pretends it has an economic impact, then it will certainly be counter-productive to them.

Let's find out.

Those who will participate in the boycotte. They'll find their job replaces come Tuesday.

Media will make tons on it :)

The point is not to have a long-term economic impact. The point is to show that "illegals" comprise a significant part of the economy.

And that point is practically a matter of fact.

But is it negative or positive.

Will all illegals that happen to be injured on 1-may boycott the hospitals? That would be an economic positive.

They say they'll boycott the schools (well, their illegal kids will) but is that positive or negative? Positive, clearly.

I doubt there are many, if any, illegal school teachers.

Better not plan to go out for dinner Monday.

Funny, but given all 7 days of the week, isn't Monday the least likely that folks go out to eat? By me many restaurants are closed on Mondays. Hence, not much of an impact.

It'll be Y2K all over again -- all hype and no substance.

"Boss, I won't be in on Monday. Monday is our protest day. I must protest for your country to allow me to break the law!" Said Pedro.

Boss furrows his brows and replies, "Okay. I'll get someone to replace you. Thanks for letting me know."

"Yes, you must get someone to replace me for the day," Pedro responded.

"For the day?" Boss asked.
