ID Not Science...says Vatican paper

Yes, but interestingly enough, two of the most important witnesses at the Dover trial, both pro and con, were avowed practicing catholics. Dr. Miller of Brown (I think) testified against ID, and I believe Dr. Behe for ID is also a catholic.

The value of having the vatican, for once, make a sound prounouncment on this is that politically it might cut into the polling that indicates that many American (without understanding) think teaching ID is a good, honest academic exersize. Now, catholics at least, may have to think before enrolling in those anti-science political debates. I'm not really hopeful, but it is possible....besides, it is going to piss off my brother who is a very conservative catholic convert and who sends me books in ID at Xmass time. :)

I'm confused...

I read the article and altough they believe god created evolution ( or something like that ), does that mean they believe that god tried out different types of creation.

Good god - help me.

HELP ME GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Talk about convenience. What about the rest of the rubbish that they espouse as fact. When will they start telling us that transubstantiation of the Eucharist is a load of cobblers as well?

Personally I think they're just covering their ar$es to save their faces.

That's good, but I don't think that's going to help much. Aren't most ID adherants protestant fundamentalists?
Yes, but part of creationist dogma is the trash about "evolution is an atheist religion". Now when the Vatican says something nice about evolution, this gets into the news and frightens the little fundies. This is why the DI is whining about "putting words in the Vatican's mouth" when the statement comes from the Vatican.

I haven't been able to get a translation of the article in question, and I wonder to what extent the wire service journalist accurately summarized it.

At any rate, Professor Facchini, the evolutionary biologist who penned the article (who's a priest as well, though AP doesn't mention it) also contributed the entry entitled "Man, Origin and Nature" in the Catholic-oriented online Interdisciplinary Encyclopaedia of Religion and Science, which can be read in English here.
