Meeting at UT Martin Friday, the UT Board of Trustees voted to award Gore an Honorary Doctor of Laws and Humane Letters in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. The honorary degree will be presented to Gore, also a former U.S. senator from Tennessee, at the spring commencement of the UTK College of Arts and Sciences on May 14.

What's the big deal? A school in his home state gives him, a former VP, an honor. No one takes honorary degrees seriously as an academic award. It is more for donations and to land a speaker during spring graduation.

Didn't Hannity and Rove get honorary PhD's from Liberty University? (Hannity and Rove aren't from Virginia.) Only people like Jerry Falwell would use a "Dr." title, even though the "doctorate" was purely honorary.
