Hurricane in Hawaii

Don't think so. My cousin is in Honolulu. She says they expect a cat 2 by the time it gets there. It looks like it reached cat 5 and will arrive on Friday but it's going to miss the islands. They'll get outer bands, a lot of rain and wind. I hope there isn't too much storm surge, but she should know late tomorrow what to expect.

I looked at the HI Explore cam this morning and all was calm. I hope the cameras stay up.

The news reports there isn't enough shelter space if Oahu were to get a direct hit.

It won't be Trump that's the problem here. We're hoping that the governor presses the hurricane button instead of the missile button this time. He has proactively gotten FEMA ready in a display extremely counter to "Hawaiian Time" which is great news.

On the other hand, not only has the government had to admit that it blew all the hurricane shelter money on friends and nonsense, and only has capacity for 20% of the population, but now they are saying that they are going to force people to stay in disaster areas through road closures. If you happen to get whacked in your random pick of equally scary locations, you are not allowed to leave and must just suffer and take it. People have a crazy "government is mommy and daddy and knows what's best for you" attitude here, which has clobbered us countless times, but hopefully this time it doesn't get a bunch of people killed needlessly.

On the other hand, Mayor Caldwell is looking REALLY good and competent. For Oahu, this is probably the last day for the beach for a bit, but there should be some decent shorebreak on the east side, and I'm going to try and get in there while its still safe for some fun, not terrifying, but decent surf close to shore.

My main concern is that the two big runways right near the population centers; the two big civilian international airports and the big runways at Hickam, are right on the shore and in the likely direct path. If those get taken out and the roads are put in bad shape, making getting stuff from Bellows Air Force Base and Marine Corp Base Hawaii's runways a lot harder.

Hawaii is probably pretty above "carrying capacity" and probably needs steady supplies of things on a good day. And even if the ship's are prestaged and ready to go getting supplies there by ship would take days.

Hawaii is in the "Middle of Nowhere" like no other heavily populated place on Earth is.

Cousin just posted a bunch of pictures on FB. Everything is closed and some businesses are boarded up. She stocked up on tequila. :D

Explore cam still looks mild, and the storm tracker still shows Lane's eye passing well to the west.

Cousin posted a lot more videos, looks like the rain has caused some significant flooding, raging rivers, and the tide is coming up over into parking lots and whatnot.

Looks like it petered out for Oahu thankfully. We spent most of the day at the skatepark, just drizzles, supposed to rain a bit more tonight.

Cousin posted a few pics from the beach, lots of people out despite the warning sounds having blared one time for a short blast. Not much wave or wind action from the Oahu beach cams before the sun set.

Her biggest crisis was the long line at the only coffee shop that stayed open.

Flooding on Hawaii looked pretty bad, 3 feet of rain in 48 hours. I haven't seen any news from Maui.

Maui has some nasty fires, and even though they are having bad flooding, its not putting the fires out. We had some tweakers on Oahu try and start a few fires, one got caught, one fire of unknown origin is still burning on the west side

The best waves are when the storm is far away.

The best waves are the ones you are riding. :)

I am trusting in pipelineaudio's read of his local breaks. On my locals, a far off storm can push a clean groundswell in and give great rides if local wind is offshore. A closer storm, when it passes through the right window, can give a punchier ride but just as fun.

Oh I'd be down at the shorebreaks right now, as storm conditions make even the backwash fun! But with the population we have now, even a tiny, tiny bit of rain means raw sewage all over the shorebreaks. Last time I went I ended up with infections all over my body. I guess the stinging seaweed is always there, but you only really notice it when it lets all that sewage into your skin.
