I remember back in 2003 some cult claiming they cloned a baby or two. Most people have dismissed it as fake. However, while not a believer in the occult, was there ever any conclusive evidence to actually confirm or deny the claim?

I forgot about that. Was it the Raelians who claimed that?

Yup, a quick google returned this story as the top hit

http://archives.cnn.com/2002/HEALTH/12/27/human.cloning/index.html

To answer eth OP, this claim was never "disproved"as far as I am aware, but eth children never materialized-The Raelains never produced any evidence, dispute promising to do so. Until they offer anything other than their word that they have cloned humans, I think it is safe to assume that they haven't.

How would one reasonably go about proving or disproving it for once and for all?

Sequence comparisons of the cloned and parental DNA? A clone should be an identical match. I'm not sure which DNA would be used to make the match but HLA genes would seem appropriate. Or maybe a gene library analysis?

Ah, the Raelians...even crackpots call them crazy! Yeah, they claimed to have successfully cloned a human, but never produced the goods.

Furthermore, their headquarters in Quebec have recently been put on the market, and they've announced their plans to relocate to Las Vegas. The reason?

Skeptics say it is because their popularity has been declining regularly, and they no longer have the financial means to maintain their sprawling Quebec property. The Raelians say it is because they've already 'saturated' Quebec, and need to move on to fresh grounds where they can find new members.

The Raelians have also been petitioning the U.N. to provide an international embassy for aliens -- designated as the property of the aliens, subject to all the protections associated with a formal embassy -- at which point they say that the aliens whom their founder, Rael, speaks to will finally reveal themselves to the rest of mankind.

Unfortunately for the rest of mankind, that slow-moving and politically corrupt UN mechanism has failed to come through and provide the requested embassy.

Did Mr. Vorilhon have any religious training prior to going nuts?
