Huge Iceberg Breaks Off Antarctica

Yes, please.

And it COULD be a "bad thing." Not sure if the downwelling of cold dense water will just start up in another spot or not.

If this does stop that flow, we could be in for a rough time of it, as that ultimately effects surface currents.

Ya see pj...that chunk of ice is part of an ice shelf and if you can point to where ice shelves are being generated Ben and I would surely be amazed

There are just about zero left in the Arctic

New cracks suggest largest remaining Arctic ice shelf destined to disappear

Posted on Monday, April 14 @ 11:44:59 ICT

WARD HUNT ISLAND, Nunavut — New cracks in the largest remaining Arctic ice shelf suggest another polar landmark seems destined to break up and disappear.

Scientists discovered the extensive new cracks in the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf earlier this year and a patrol of Canadian Rangers got an up-close look at them last week.
“The map of Canada has changed,” said Derek Mueller of Trent University, who was amazed to find how quickly the shelf has deteriorated since he discovered the first crack in 2002.

“These changes are happening in concert with other indicators of climate change.”

Mr. Mueller and his fellow researchers were expected to release their findings on Saturday. But a patrol of Canadian Rangers travelling west last week from CFB Alert at the northern tip of Ellesmere Island saw the cracks first-hand.

“We're looking at the possible demise of the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf,” said Doug Stern, a Ranger and Parks Canada employee, who was on the patrol and has been helping Mueller with his research.

now about those "growing" ice bergs.....?? :popcorn1

I'm a bit curious about icebergs breaking off. You see, they grow and grow until eventually, they are dynamically unstable. Then they break off.

According to the Gaia planetary morality of Warmers, this is "BAD".

What is "GOOD"?

For ice to continue growing relentlessly?

"GOOD" then would be a movement into another ice age?

I don't know much about global warming but I imagine that "good" would be an equilibrium.

Okay, worst case scenario is that it drifts far enough north to cause some kind of unusual weather patterns. Note the "unusual", not "never before seen we're all going tot die".

Whatever the results, it is NOT going to change the climate, it is only transient, and will only move heat around, not cause more heat.

So, the effect is one thing, the cause is another. Did it break due to warmth, or did it break due because more coldness caused growth?

Hey, the last time an ice shelf broke off, some scientists were going to check the sediment under the shelf to see how often it has happened historically. Any news of that look-in-to? is it "Never ever happened before", or is it "Ho-hum, Happens every couple thousand years, no big deal" ?

Ummm, I am guessing you did not read the article????

I am guessing you did not know that the danger is that it will stay in the immediate area?

I am guessing you did not know that the issue (though a stretch) is that it would mess with the formation of the flow deep, cold water which happens ONLY there and at two spots in the North Atlantic?

A medium sized thermonuclear device could solve this problem.

What I'm curious about is whether this will speed up or slow down the movement of the Mertz Glacier that is on land

Expectation is that it will speed up as the inertia of an ice tongue resists movement.

Ben, Have you seen this:

I recommend it for everybody, regardless of where you stand on the AGW issue. The imagery alone is worth the watch. To actually watch glaciers move via time lapse photography is amazing and to see what an incredibly dynamic system Greenland has become is like watching Geology occur in real time. I'm sure you would enjoy it if you haven't already seen it.
