How to time shift the internet broadcast

There is a program called SDP (Streaming Download Project) which allows recording and time shifting of internet broadcasts - like a VCR for Windows Media streaming. This program is fully functional and free, although they DO accept donations.

1 - Download the Streaming Download Project executable

Go to the Streaming Download Project web page.

In the Downloads Section, for Products and Info choose "SDP receiver (latest version)".

Save the SDP2_0_0.zip file in its own folder, unzip it, and run SETUP.EXE. Then run SDP.exe.

2 - Test ability to record streaming data

Click the Open button, and copy the text "mms://wmbcast.kqed.speedera.net/wmbcast_kqed_jan112002_1500_2555" (without quotes) for the address. After clicking the OK button, the URL should be displayed in the "URLs:" box at the bottom of the main panel. (This URL comes from http://www.kqed.org/w/streamingfiles/kqed_wmp.asx)

Modem users beware!! Make sure your connection auto connects and most importantly - auto disconnects after closure. If it does not, either SDP will not connect when it tries to, or worse, you end up with a huge phone bill because it did not disconnect automatically.

Click the Go button, and choose a location to save recorded data. It should start recording the .asf file.

In File Explorer, locate the .asf file and double click it to open it into Windows Media Player. (It can play the file while the file is recording.)

Close the Windows Media Player.

Click the Abort button in SDP.

Click the VCR time button to open the VCR setup dialog. Use the Date box arrows (at right hand side) to select a graphical date calendar picker.

Set VCR ON time to present date and 2 minutes into the future.

Set VCR OFF time to present date and 10 minutes into the future.

Click the VCR On button. The lettering on the VCR On button should turn red.

Verify that it begins recording in 2 minutes.

Verify that it stops recording at the preset VCR OFF time. (If you are using a modem, make sure your connection auto disconnects after closure. If it does not, you could end up with a huge phone bill.)

3 - Record the JREF Internet Broadcast

Make sure your computer time is set accurately. (If you need to, you can get Automachron to set the time.)

If the VCR On button is still red, click it to stop the VCR timer.

Click the Open button, and copy the text "mms://mind-win.com/randi" (without quotes) for the address. After clicking the OK button, the URL should be displayed in the "URLs:" box at the bottom of the main panel.

Click the VCR time button to open the VCR setup dialog. Use the Date box arrows (at right hand side) to select a graphical date calendar picker.

Set VCR ON time to date and time of the next JREF internet broadcast. This is Thursday nights at 9PM EST (Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA). Be sure to account for the case where one time zone is on daylight savings time when the other time zone is on standard time.

Set VCR OFF time to 2 hours after the VCR ON time. Also, don't forget the VCR OFF date.

Click the VCR On button. The lettering on the VCR On button should turn red.

When the JREF broadcast starts, it should start recording and keep recording until the broadcast ends.

Does this mean I can record the entire Randi webcast without waiting up in the small hours of the morning?
