How to enable local scripting on XP?

After installing a new hard drive XP says I need to reactivate it. However when I try to activate XP I get the message -

"Activate Windows cannot run because local scripting has been disabled on this computer. Scripting may have been disabled for virus prevention or as a security measure. Once local scripting has been enabled, run Activate Windows again."

Google hasn't been any help, neither has support.microsoft.com. The local (UK) support telephone line is closed until 8am tomorrow morning.

Any ideas on how to enable local scripting? XP Pro with SP2 installed.
 
Found this using google

In Internet Explorer, select Tools | Internet Options. In the dialog box that pops up, select the 'Security' tab. Then select the 'Internet' item from the list of content zones. Click the 'Custom Level' button, and scroll to the bottom of the list. Towards the bottom of this list, you should see an item called 'Active Scripting'. In the list of options under it, make sure 'Enable' is checked. Then keep hitting the Ok button until you're back out of the dialog boxes. Scripting should now be enabled again.

Immediately after you have successfully re-activated windows, RETURN THE 'Active Scripting' SETTING BACK TO ITS ORIGINAL VALUE OF OFF!. Having such a thing enabled is an entirely unnecessary security risk.
 
Hmm - active scripting already enabled, tried disabling but it stays enabled. I suspect one of my myriad anti-spyware progs may be the cause. Off to try removing them and see what happens...
 
Went as far as uninstalling all anti-spyware progs, antivirus, Ashampoo etc ... no luck.

M$ support say I'm not entitled to any free support and want even more of my money. Surprise.

So here I am with one day left to re-activate XP and no means of doing so. I wonder what happens at zero days left - does Bill send the boys round?

Might try a repair, just in case, but suspect I'll have to do a fresh install of XP. Thankfully I've managed to copy all essential stuff onto DVD so I can continue work on my laptop (7.2GB - where does it all come from?).

That'll teach me to disinfect a friend's hard drive of all spyware and viruses by putting it in my XP desktop machine!

BHG - older and a little wiser. Maybe.
