I'm just curious. How many friends do you think that you have? I'm referring to people that you see outside of work or offical duties; people that you would willingly spend time with for pleasure.

Are you the person who wrote none? I can relate to that. I don't have a lot of friends for a couple reasons. One, I live in the burbs and my son is now grown so I have few connections to people here. There are only a couple I have anything in common with. And I have a private practice with no employees so while I see lots of people and some I've known for 15-20 years, none of them are people I would see outside of work.
So I started hanging out with the local skeptic's meet up. It helps to see people you have something in common with. I'm beginning to think of more than a few of them as good friends.

What are you doing to meet people you have something in common with?

This is a difficult one. In Australia we gave the concept of "mateship" and I would have a couple of dozen mates who I would see fairly regularly and share a coffee or beer. I would only have three I would call friend, which I define as someone I can confide in, won't judge me and would help me at any time (and vice versa of course).

Its hard to say really. 3 of the people I would consider to be my best friends, I don't see at all because they live on the other side of the world.

none.

Mostly, this agrees with me, but I would like to have people to work with sometimes to counter that desert-island feeling.

Mr. Walter Becker:

This moody bastard remembers
You were some kind of friend even then
Once in a great while
He needs one...

If my wife counts, then I have one. It really depends on what you mean by friend though. There are several people who I game with whose company I enjoy, but I've never even met them.

I put down 2 - 5, including my husband. I have hundreds of aquaintances, mostly from work. My life has become overly defined by my business, and I'm selling it.

I just completed training for volunteer work, and wondered about our local skeptics' group. From your perspective, it sounds like might be worth looking into?

Do family members you spend a lot of time with count as friends?

I thought that it would be best to let each person responding create their own definition of what constitutes a friend. The only criteria for the question is that the relationship be 1) voluntary 2) meaningful. If you want to limit it to non-family members, people you've been friends with for at least a year, or only those who you would bury a body with, that's up to you.

If your definition is "people you would willingly spend time with for pleasure" (excluding models, actresses, sportswomen...) I have hundreds of friends.

However if we are talking close friends - people we can confide in, people we would feel comfortable turning to in a time of need, perhaps a dozen?

I liked Mike!'s definition the best. I think that's good to work with. :)

You mean acquaintance then. In such case I have 2 or 3 dozen maybe at the outset, a dozen already alone due to RPG (pen and paper).

Friend for me is something more, and of those I have only 2.

A friend will help you move.

A real friend will help you move a body.

I took the question to be about real friends. I have probably three of those. Apropos of nothing, the question also put me in mind of Eddie Vedder's lyric, "I'm a lucky man to count on both hands the ones I love."

I have probably...

4 people in my life that I'd call good close friends.

All I need and can keep track of....

I've been blessed in the true friend department.

Between growing up, the military and otj, I'n in the 6-10 category, leaving out my girl and family.
