An atheist I know said recently, "people who volunteer for service in armed forces are too stupid to be atheists anyway".

Sounds like a myth I've heard somewhere. :oldroll:

It was in a thread about the US army teaching "spiritual fitness" to its forces.

I know of a number of "atheists in foxholes" who are respected members of this forum.

In the poll, by "atheists in foxholes", I mean anyone who's an atheist and who is, or was, a member of the defence forces or reserves.

Stand up and be counted! I'd like to tip my hat to you.

I've heard many variations of the "people who volunteer for the armed forces are too stupid to be a(n)_________".

e.g. scientist, doctor, etc...

I'm three for three, but just one person. I must be an anomaly...unless I'm not allowed to be.:D

Allow me to put my hand up 22 years in the Airforce . I used to have to stay in my room and polish my boots during Church parade on Sunday morning during my recruit training.

Btw I have a degree in aviation systems management, an associate diploma in aircraft electronics, a degree in aircraft navigation systems and a diploma of Frontline management so I guess I am not too stupid

I'm not in a foxhole now but I did have to dig them and get in them when I was in the U.S. Army. I was an atheist then and now.

I have a B.A., a B.S. and an M.Eng. degree. I'm working on a Ph.D. in engineering and working full time as an engineering consultant.

Not in a foxhole right now, but I've been in them, literally and close-enough-to-fit-the-bill.

I've never been a part of the military, but since I have a pathological obsession with answering polls, I had to vote Planet X.

Was never in a literal foxhole (not many in USAF, especially in peacetime), but match OP criteria.

Although I freely admit my decision to enlist WAS stupid.

Yes, served, USAF 24 years.
Yes, combat.
Yes, foxhole, as OPFOR/Desert Survival Instructor.
Yes, atheist, specifically atheist/agnostic.

But no, strictly speaking, not an atheist in a foxhole in combat. Foxholes are very hard to dig in the cockpit floor.

While I was smart enough not to risk repeated head trauma and subdermal lead poisoning, my older brother was a foxhole atheist in the US Army and has a M.S. in Psychology.

I'm an idiot, but I'm also an atheist who spent 7.5 years in the army. Of course, I never saw combat so I don't really meet the actual intended meaning of the "there are no atheists in foxholes" quote. My most stressful times while in were basic training and when I was preparing to run my first event. Basic training wasn't as bad as I expect, but when I was setting up for the event, which was 5 years after basic, I got so stressed that I collapsed from exhaustion and ended up in the hospital. Neither event resulted in me finding religion.

Not currently, but likely to be an atheist in a nuclear submarine in the not too distant future.

Smart people join the military. Especially ones that have no idea what they want to do with their lives and tend to be unproductive in an unstructured environment.

Did a hitch in the USAF. Spent my last year Ft. Meade, MD (never served on an AFB after training, Misawa NAB in Japan, then Ft. Meade). I was assigned to NSA. It was some kind of hole.

If only army count, I was not in a foxhole. If bad city quarter count and thug attacks, I was a few time in a foxhole, or rather on the wrong side of a weapon.

Much respect and many thanks to you for your service, DJW, Shadow the Poodle, RenaissanceBiker, Garrette, Mark6, Pope130, Dragonrock, JoeB, Mister Agenda, and George152. :th:
