I have this dilemma. I have a PC sitting in the basement. It is cold down there. It doesn't seem to want to break.

I also have this work issued laptop and it likes to break. Every laptop I have gotten from work (all 2 of them) have broken within 6 months and then again once a year or so. By break I mean some motherboard component goes bad and the motherboard has to be replaced.

So, I am thinking about replacing the machine in the basement with a more portable laptop. I have concerns about reliability though. So, I figure why not create a poll?

For those of you who have purchased a *new* laptop, how long until somethng major (expensive to replace) failed?

I get at least 2-3 years out of the laptops I've owned. I just got a new one, and it works great still after a few months. I'll let you know if it goes up in a cloud of smoke though.

ETA: Perhaps your laptops would last longer if you didn't abuse them and download goat/nun porn all the time? ;)

Goat/nun porn? Seriously, that breaks laptops??

Uh, O....K...... :wide-eyed

I have a laptop that works fine and it's from the mid 90's. It's not really usable for anything other than telnet and "domewars". It's an old mac laptop.
