How do you play games with openGL?

My games which utilise openGL no longer work. I formatted my hard drive a few weeks ago so that's probably why. What do I need to download or do? I've tried loads of drivers for my graphics card eg the latest nvidia one and the latest MSI one (the manufacturer of my graphics card). But all to no avail.

I have a MSI ti4200 graphics card.

Any advice appreciated.

Your video card implements the OpenGL API and provides a library file for software developers to link their applications to. My guess is that by reformatting your hard drive, the games currently not working can no longer access or cannot find your MSI video card library file(s). If you re-install the hardware drivers, then re-install the games, that should resolve the problem by pointing the game software to the correct hardware library during installation.

Nah that doesn't work. I've tried everything. I'm going to have to give up on it.

If your OS is Windows, check the 'advanced' tab on the 'Display properties' settings panel. There is a tab called 'performance'. Make sure the setting is on 'full' in the hardware acceleration control.

Something else to try is one of the GL performance benchmark routines. They might give a clue.

Try searching or posting on here for a proper answer. I recall having to download special opengl drivers for an old voodoo3dfx card, but any geforce card should have the necessary software. Your problem is probably less to do with the drivers and more likely to be a conflict within windows somewhere.

I forget the name and location, but if you look you will find a utility that properly removes all traces of your current graphics drivers. Try that and then reinstall and older NVidia driver (somewhere in the 40's rather than the latest 5x and 6x series).

Then format your PC if that doesn't work...

Yeah, I have already last night. Just one response so far which, looking at what he said, isn't exactly helpful.

Yes, I would tend to agree.

Hmmm . .now that's an idea. Anyone know of such a utility and where I could download it from?

yea

Create a restore point first, Ian. And a startup disc.

Any vid hardware / software changes can leave you unable to see what you are doing to undo what you did.

I think.

Er yes. I just got left with a complete blank screen! The sound came on as windows initialised but it was as if the monitor was turned off! So I reinstalled windows. But it's like it's been formatted except I haven't lost all my stuff because it's all in another "my documents". I had to reinstall drivers for internet connection and graphics. Won't bother with the sound because I might as well do a proper format now. Just backing up my stuff on discs first.

I'll get this Doom 3 to work eventually!

Been there. Had that sinking feeling.

Have a nice evening!

:D

Just formatted. The only thing I've done so far is connect the internet driver. Everything is huge on my screen! :D

OK, I intend to use the driver on my original installation disc for my graphics card. Is that a good idea? (I'm not just asking Sam here but anyone who is able to give me advice). Also, before installing doom 3 again, is there any other advice? Any special drivers I should install for my various things? I intend to download a driver for my sound card off the net. What about Windows updates; should I download and install them first? Ooops, just thought, haven't got a firewall on yet!

Gotta go!

Nah, still doesn't work. I can put "Return to Castle Wolfenstein" on at 640 x 480 resolution and sometimes I can with Doom 3. Also once I've loaded RTCW I can then increase the resolution whilst in the game to 1600 x 1200. I can't do this with Doom 3 due to the fact that you need to go out of the game and restart before the changes take effect.

OK, I'm a bit baffled here because I was playing RTCW about 12 - 18 months ago with the same OS (ie XP) and the same drivers etc, and yet now it's not working!

I'm perplexed.

Could it possibly have anything to do with the window updates I installed? Or what about the settings in the BIOS? Don't think I've changed any of the settings in the past 18 months but can't be absolutely sure.

They're the only 2 possibilities I can think of, but there again I know very little about PCs. Anyone able to think of any other possibilities? Could it be the window updates or BIOS??

I'm going to now try the lastest msi nvidia driver, then check the BIOS, and if no luck to format it again. This time I'll put the NTFS? rather than FAT32. Really Pi**ing me off checking my drive all the time when I have to reset my computer. Doesn't happen with NTFS.

Any advice appreciated :)

It's extremely unlikely to be anything in your BIOS unless you have changed something there yourself recently.

If you've done a complete format (XP should install to NTFS by default unless you are dual-booting) and are still having problems with all-new drivers, I would try a different graphics card altogether if possible. If you are dual-booting with 98 or ME, use a different hard drive.

Time to invest in that 9800 pro you said you'd buy! I got one myself 6 weeks ago and have not looked back since.

It's working! I went into the BIOS and changed a setting called "AGP drive strength" from manual to auto. I've just tried it 3 times in a row at a resolution of 1600 X 1200, and it worked each time.

So looks very promising because I only got it running at 640 x 480 about twice out of 20 times before.

I have no idea what this AGP drive strength is. Maybe one of my friends altered it before because I have a couple of them who know much more than me about all this stuff (or at least they used to LOL).

I got put off the 9800 card because I read somewhere that it gets hot. Just looked in my BIOS now and the temp was 67C :( Mind you, it's absolutely unplayable at 1600 X 1200 at the moment :( Maybe I should just get one anyway.
