hmmm, I don't know much about this subject but I would think a house-sized meteorite hitting the ground would be quite an event and evidence to find the point of impact wouldn't be that hard.

from the article...

No other reports were received by police and extensive police patrols of the area for more than an hour did not turn up the space debris.

"We went out to check if it was something bad, like a plane," said a police spokesman.

"However we didn't find anything - there was no bloody great rock sitting in the middle of the highway, anyway".

Police intend on talking to the original witness again later today in an effort to pinpoint the impact site, but admit that unless someone literally stumbles over the meteorite, the chances of finding it are slim.

could it be a slight exaggeration on the part of the witness?

Couldn't find a "house-sized" meteor, but you can try 50 meters, which would certainly be a very large house, though not off the charts. The blast would destroy every building within a five-mile radius.

Kinda hard to see how the Australian constabulary missed that detail...

:D He was smiling when he said this, right? I mean, if a rock the size of a house comes ripping through the atmosphere at five miles/second, it's going to get pulverized the instant it hits.

Gee, you think?

There WAS something in the papers the other day about a grapefruit-sized meteorite punching through a ceiling in New Zealand. Possible case of meteorite envy?
