Qandeel Baloch, one of Pakistan's most famous and controversial social media stars, has been strangled to death in what police are calling a case of so called "honor" killing in the city of Multan in the country's province of Punjab.

After going on the run, the brother was later arrested and confessed on a video that police showed at a news conference.

I've no idea if the Wikipedia article quoted below is accurate. But I wonder if the killer will be prosecuted and if his sentence will be the same or less as the "common" murderer.

Honor killings are tried by the 1990 Qisas and Diyat Ordinance of Pakistan, which permits the individual and his or her family to retain control over a crime, including the right to determine whether to report the crime, prosecute the offender, or demand diyat (or compensation). Since most honour killings are committed by a close relative, if and when the case reaches a court of law, the victim's family may 'pardon' the murderer, or be pressured to accept diyat (financial compensation). The murderer then goes free.[238] Once such a pardon has been secured, the state has no further writ on the matter although often the killers are relatives of the victim. Scholars suggest that the Islamic law doctrine of Qisas and Diyya encourages honor killings, particularly against females, as well as allows the murderer to go unpunished.
Since this woman was in some way a public figure, maybe the state will proceed with a prosecution for murder.

You guys gotta be ******** me. The first two replies to my post are absolutely worthless! :)

It's a truly barbaric practice that needs stomped out strongly. They still think of women as property, which is horrific.

I don't know how to do this though apart from law changes, which won't happen until cultural changes.

Well, I've heard of this so-called "Slut Shaming", but never have seen this "Slut Strangling". Very interesting.

I wanted to comment, but I couldn't tell if the killing worked or not. Was honour restored?

Baloch's brother cited the scandal as the trigger that caused him to kill her in his taped confession.

I can't even tell what the alleged scandal is supposed to be. That her picture was taken with a Muslim cleric? Too bad she had a homicidal maniac for a brother. I have no idea what Pakistan's legal system will do with it. I wish she had gotten out of Pakistan for her own safety. Not that she should have to, of course.

It's a strange culture, they have had a female prime minister (who was assimilated later during a election campaign) which always strikes me as very strange given how women are generally treated.

Yeah, right. The ******** who do such have no honor and need to be pushed off roofs or have their heads cut off in public place and a placard left in the place either option occurred saying, perhaps, "The life you take will get yours taken!!!!!" And were I in charge they would know and believe that.

Did you, perchance, mean assassinated?:confused::confused:

My sister annoys me sometimes.

Probably wouldn't kill her though.

Unless it was something really annoying

It's not that uncommon in many cultures. Jason Dej-Oudom is a US example of similar views towards women.

FWIW:

Honour killing also happens in Christian communities in the Mediterranean and other regions. The culture of Ancient Rome allowed the father to kill his children if he deemed necessary. Honour killing was only abolished as a specific category in Italy in 1981, and murders in the name of honour still occur in the country. In 2006, Bruna Morito was shot six times in the face by her brother for bearing a child outside marriage. In Brazil, men could be acquitted for murdering their wives up until 1991, and there have been 800 recorded such murders in a single year. Even in 1991, a lower court ignored the ruling of the Supreme Court and acquitted Joao Lopes for the double homicide of his wife and her lover. In fact, the opposition of the woman as the vessel of familial honour and the man as its protector was widespread throughout the southern European region, although it is not clear how many murders are committed in the name of honour at the present time.

Even within the Middle East, honour killing is not restricted to Muslims. In Yemen, a Jewish father killed his daughter after a rebuke from the rabbi for her extra-marital pregnancy, and in Palestine, in 2005, Faten Habash was beaten to death with an iron bar, wielded by her Christian father because she wanted to marry her Muslim boyfriend.

What's there to say? It's awful. It's horrible. Pakistan is messed up beyond belief, and I don't see that changing any time soon. So, I joke about it, because inappropriate humor seems a better response than despair.

Import them all to the USA where the magic dirt will infect them making them all Jeffersonian Liberals.
