Link1:

Appeantly, HGH hasn't been shown to have peformance enhancing abilities or to have an effect on rehabilitation.

Thus you ask, Link 2:

So then why do baseball player take it?

Wonder if the actual effects of HGH will be brought up or mentioned in the congress hearings...

BTW, I am soooo tired of this social roid rage. Congress?!? Isn't there a war going on or some other way they can better spend their time?

Also, just cause it is amazing and baseball:

Interesting. They probably took it because they heard it couldn't be detected.

Rennie MJ.Claims for the anabolic effects of growth hormone: a case of the emperor's new clothes? Br J Sports Med. 2003 Apr;37(2):100-5.

This review examines the evidence that growth hormone has metabolic effects in adult human beings. The conclusion is that growth hormone does indeed have powerful effects on fat and carbohydrate metabolism, and in particular promotes the metabolic use of adipose tissue triacylglycerol. However, there is no proof that net protein retention is promoted in adults, except possibly of connective tissue. The overexaggeration of the effects of growth hormone in muscle building is effectively promoting its abuse and thereby encouraging athletes and elderly men to expose themselves to increased risk of disease for little benefit.

Too bad there isn't a sport wherein its ok to try anything to enhance performance.
It would be very educational.

How about all-star wrestling, body building and, well, . . . football (american version).

The drug testing in major sports is a complete, and total joke. Consider this:

Track and cycling routinely are raked over the coals as "the dirtiest sports." These sports are filled with athletes who have limited financial resources, the prospect of limited financial reward - even when better than average, FAR greater chance of getting caught, and punishments which essentially are career ending - and yet large numbers of athletes still take drugs.

On the other hand, a sport like football is treated as if it is "really cracking down". And yet, the athletes have unlimited financial resources, unlimited financial benefit (even if you are the worst in the league) if successful, virtually no chance of getting caught and punishments which are a joke.

A cyclist gets caught using drugs and he AND HIS TEAM are removed from the tour de france. Shawn Merriman gets caught using steroids in the NFL, is suspended for a few games, and is voted MVP of the league at the end of the same season.

If you really want to see what a sport would look like if all drugs were legal, just watch an NFL game - that is about as close as it gets.

Why might a sportsman take it? http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/front_page/3101343.stm

In simple terms, to increase muscle size. Because there is a correlation between muscle size and strength, competitors in events that require power and short bursts of explosive strength would be most likely to benefit.

It also allows tired muscles to recover quicker - allowing you to train harder and more often.

But it is of far less use in endurance sports, where EPO has been favoured because it increases one's oxygen-carrying capacity and thus stamina.

Rocky star Sylvester Stallone could face up to five years behind bars after being charged with importing a banned human growth hormone into Australia.

Customs officials in Sydney found five vials of the hormone, which claims to enhance sexual performance and build muscle, in the star's luggage as he flew in from America to promote his new film, Rocky Balboa.

Any one remember Charles Atlas? He was in the adds on back of Superman Comics in the 50's. At the time, he was promoted as the world's most perfectly developed man. By today's standards, he was average. To get bulkier than him requires some drugs, me thinks.
