So the "Living" section of my local newspaper (how's that for irony?) had a big, gushingly credulous front-page spread yesterday announcing the impending arrival of pop-psycho Lisa Williams, who will be coming to a town nearby (where most of my adult students live) to help the bereaved channel their dead loved ones for the low, low ticket price of $37.50 to $68.

There's no way I'm going to buy a ticket, nor encourage anyone else to do so, but I'd still like to turn this into some kind of genuine learning opportunity for my students. Anyone got any good suggestions?

If you or any of your students want to try their hand at "channeling," how about some pre-show cold reading for ticket buyers out in front of the theater? Depending on the venue, you might be able to pull it off if you keep it fairly quiet, so you don't get run off by security. Or you can hand out some flyers featuring the basics of cold reading. Of course, Lisa's still gonna get the ticket money from these people, but you might be able to get a few people thinking.

You got problems? I've got Sylvia B. herself coming to my city as part of her "farewell tour". I get to see her face every morning in the "Culture" section. I think that's at least a draw on the irony meter.

About the only thing that leaps to mind would be to do some overall review of Williams (or just the "talking to the dead" folks in general) as to their claims, compared to various cold/hot reading techniques.

Williams cold/hot reading techniques are pretty basic; perhaps some of the former "psychic's" that are on the forum could give you a run down on what she does?

That, combined with some independent research would make a excellent class "penned" Letter to the Editor option, or something in the school paper….or even a lower key "pro" vs "con" class discussion.

Well, I've talked with all my students, and nobody wants to go see her (hooray!). I like the idea of a class letter to the school paper. Maybe I'll try that.
