Mubarak Wins Egypt Election in Landslide - Sep 8, 2005

CAIRO, Egypt — President Hosni Mubarak won Egypt's first contested presidential race, according to a preliminary count Thursday, an expected victory in a vote that was crucial to his claims of democratic reform but was marred by allegations of irregularities.

Mubarak took 78 percent to 80 percent of Wednesday's polling and opposition candidate Ayman Nour took 12 percent a respectable showing for a relative unknown and one that could propel him to greater political prominence.

Despite government promises of a clean race, reports were widespread of pressure and intimidation for voters to support Mubarak.

The 77-year-old Mubarak has ruled Egypt for 24 years, re-elected in referendums in which he was the only candidate.

The election commission official said that voter turnout was around 30 percent.
So....78% of 30% of 77,505,756 is 18,136,348. 18,136,348 voted for Mubarak, 59,369,408 Egyptians didn't vote... or voted for the other guy...it's a landslide!.....again.. ;)

It's Democracy in the Middle East!

I wonder if they even bother using Diebold machines? ;)

Speaking of voter irregularities, I recently read somewhere that when Glen Ochoa was executed in Florida on April 5 of this year, three votes for Bush were inadvertantly cast when they pulled the switch. :)

Hey, progress is progress. No one'e ever happy with the speed, on either side of an issue.

Yeah, thirty percent. What a ringing endorsement. People probably figured, "He's going to win no matter how many people vote for the other guys, so why bother?"

By contrast, in the failed quagmire Vietnam of Iraq, people turned out despite widespread, plausible threats of violence and murder. Maybe the fact that it was the first election they'd ever participated in whose outcome wasn't pre-ordained had something to do with it.

You're right, it's the first democratic election in Egypt since 5500 BC ... Yeah progress! ;)

Mubarak will be gone in a few years anyway and he does appear to be vaguely competant (if you exclude upsetting certian islamic groups).
