The Perimeter Institute has announced Stephen Hawking as their first Distinguished Research Chair, which means he'll be spending a bit of time over here.

"I am honoured to accept the first Distinguished Research Chair at the Perimeter Institute. The Institute's twin focus, on quantum theory and gravity, is very close to my heart and central to explaining the origin of the Universe. I look forward to building a growing partnership between PI and our Centre for Theoretical Cosmology, at Cambridge. Our research endeavour is global, and by combining forces I believe we will reap rich rewards."

I'm not a physicist - I don't even play one on television - but something like this could only mean good things for the PI, Canada and physics in general.

Let's just hope that Mr Harper (if he is still in power) does not block Dr Hawking's visit to Canada on the advice of his Minister of Science and Technology who is chiroquack. :D

Wha?!? This is quite cool, especially as I just started Math/Physics at Waterloo, and walk past PI every day on my way to school.

And as regards Harper's chiroquack minister...ha I once knocked on doors with him when I was in the Hitler youth...also was friends with his son for a while. And he's a chiropractor...haha no shortage of irony there.

EDIT: I think we're OK

The line about the "origins of the universe" is interesting considering he went to the same baptist church that I attended as a child...which holds events for "Creation Ministries International" from time to time...

I'm guessing goodyear figures Hawking is harmless, and goodyear won't have a clue about physics anyhoo.

The creationuts have no argument with Hawking, who is quoted on creationut sites as saying:

Stephen Hawking has said, in his writings, "the actual point of creation lies outside the scope of presently known laws of physics...
