Anthrax suspect sues A-G
From correspondents in Washington
August 27, 2003

THE bioterrorism expert under scrutiny in the 2001 anthrax attacks filed a lawsuit overnight accusing Attorney General John Ashcroft and other government officials of trampling his constitutional rights and using him as a scapegoat for their failure to make an arrest in the case.

Dr Steven J. Hatfill claims that, by labelling him a "person of interest" in the case, Ashcroft and other federal authorities have destroyed his reputation and ruined his job prospects.
I think he may have a case. The justice department got him fired from a job, etc. and yet they apparently don't have the evidenced to convict or they would.

From what I know of the case he's probably on fairly strong ground for this lawsuit. Unfortunately, that probably means that he'll get a fat settlement from the government and it won't stop Ashcroft & Co. It'll just make the deficite a couple mil larger.

Sigh. I actually argued pro-Ashcroft when there was the flap over his nomination, I'm afraid he hasn't really lived up to my effort to justify his past actions. Just another extreme religious right conservative on the bandwagon.

My expectations of politicians are so low, yet they keep managing to come in under them...
