Has a political boycott ever worked?

Benazir Bhutto is "threatening" that the PPP will boycott the election in Pakistan.

In the 40's the Edvard Benes and the Czechoslovak National Socialist Party boycotted elections, thus allowing the Soviet-puppet communist party a sweeping victory.

Recently, opposition parties in Venezuela boycotted elections allowing Hugo to tighten his grip.

Is "boycott" another term for "giving up"? It must be incredibly frustrating to be witness to unpopular & damaging politicians steer you country down the crapper, especially if the elections are considered as being rigged. But, has a political boycott ever worked?

It creates a sort of illegitimacy -- by missing one gigantic group, you don't really have a quorum, even if technically you do.

And that large group will continue to rage after the elections until the elections are re-held.

Yeah, it worked so well in Czechoslovakia against Russian tanks. :p

I don't recall it ever working. I remember in one of the states the abolitionists boycotted so the state went with slavery.
