It's true the distant origins of the holiday lie with the Celtic Druidical religion; this is the time of year when the Lord of Death was supposed to summon the souls of evil people condemned to live in animal bodies, according to magician and skeptic James Randi in his book “An Encyclopedia of Claims, Frauds, and Hoaxes of the Occult and Supernatural.”

Having a legend about the lord of the dead isn’t going to motivate entire cultures to practice weird rituals; at least not without a good reason.

What reason would the Celts have for developing what we know as Halloween?

Simple, survival, on Oct 31 1500BC, if you gathered all the people in your little village together, by the next spring, a third or more will be dead, mostly the children.

Getting the neighbors to share the “calories” that they have been hoarding away might give the kids a jump start on living through the winter.
