Hallicination or dream

I recently had my first hallucination or lucid dream or something.

I was recovering from the flu and my fever had already disappeared a day or two earlier. I took some Nyquil and then a few hours later I had a strange psychedelic version of a TV commercial. Each specific medicine on the Nyquil bottle oozed out to cure the associated symptom. The cough suppressant was green and went to my throat, the headache medicine was blue and went to the back of my head, etc. It was very strange and I could end it by closing my eyes but each time I opened my eyes it started again. I finally kept my eyes closed and it stopped.

At the time, I thought I was awake and hallucinating but now I think I probably was asleep and dreaming but it seemed very real.

I can see how a similar dream about UFO’s or god could be taken as real.

I don't think it was a dream. When the mind is screwed up, it can easily swap one sensation for another. I've had this experience when I had mono. I was one color for a little while, and then in a bit, I'd be another. Other common effects are smelling blue, seeing sour, etc.

Nyquil contains Dextromethorphan, also known as DXM. I did a quick search on erowid.org and found the following:
In terms of effects on humans, described effects include dissociative anaesthesia, mild hallucinations, enhanced response to music (including highly pleasurable responses), and disturbances in motion.

I have experienced the dissociative and hallucination effects of Nyquil, especially when using the precision measurement method of taking a swig (or two) from the bottle.

For more info, see this article on the Erowid site. *Disclamer* The Erowid site contains lots of pro-drug (and some anti-drug) information. I would take everything with a grain of salt.

BTW, if you are looking for something with fewer side effects that will put you out, try benadryl, aka, diphenhydramine. Of course, in perscribed quantities. Even comes in liquid form for fast action. Also, "I've heard" that it works well as a sedative for pets on long car rides.

[Disclaimer, I'm not a physician, I don't want anyone to take any of my advice seriously]

I was wondering if it was the Nyquil or the flu. I guess I must be more sensitive to DXM than most people because I took the prescribed dose.

It was an interesting experience but I do not think I want to try it again.

In significantly higher doses than recommended , DXM produces such effects as extreme dissociation of the mind and body, realistic dream-like hallucinations (especially music induced), and euphoria.

Taking this much is not recommended unless you know what you're doing.
