But seriously, did the GOP really consider running a guy who's openly opined that the White Citizen's Councils weren't so bad? I'm glad he's not running, but why didn't that disqualify him in the eyes of the GOPers?

Hundreds of people have encouraged me to run and offered both to give and raise money for a presidential campaign. Many volunteers have organized events in support of my pursuing the race. Some have dedicated virtually full time to setting up preliminary organizations in critical, early states and to helping plan what has been several months of intensive activity.

Where I come from it was an organization of town leaders. In Yazoo City they passed a resolution that said anybody who started a chapter of the Klan would get their ass run out of town. If you had a job, you’d lose it. If you had a store, they’d see nobody shopped there. We didn’t have a problem with the Klan in Yazoo City.”

Yeah, you had a WHITE CITIZENS COUNCIL!!!

The mind reels. Anyway, score one for the Yankees. The South doesn't' rise again this time.
